She was already deathly ill prior to becoming a witch. Even as a witch, she was bedridden and effectively bound to the house. Swapping was her only escape. The demon didn't give a fuck as long as he had souls to eat.

Witch's House is possibly the best possible start. Short, impactful. You could also go for the classics like Ib, though I personally didn't really like that one.
IMO the scariest were Cat In The Box and Black Souls 2.

That's not the story at all?
Ellen wanted a new body because her old one was falling apart even with magic and her demon taught her how. The agreement was "bring enough souls to the house and I will provide a cure for your illness." Both sides actually met their ends of the bargin.

Yes. BS1 is your typical JRPG adventure. BS2 starts off with a spookier, more unhinged atmosphere. And then the DLC3 content starts, which goes full-on horror game.
I think horror sections in non-horror games have the potential to be scarier than actual horror games, because you grow complacent and are not expecting it. Think Ocean House Hotel in VTMB.

I don't.
The era of zero gameplay RPG Maker slop and walking simulator garbage needed to end years sooner than it did. It still hasn't fully come to a fucking close.
Use the engine to make actual quality games, or fuck off and do literally any other form of media that would be more effective for this shit. Write a novel, make a comic, make a film. Oh wait, the creators of these slop ass "games" can't, because that would require them to actually be GOOD at writing stories, and their slop would get washed away by the waves of actual quality writers' works that flood the internet.

The entire appeal of RPG maker horror is that the stories would usually be impossible to release on another medium. Sure, they might have been better as a manga, but that manga would be expensive to make and would never reach the small, niche audience that actually wants to see what fucked up shit the random internet weirdo came up with.

For unskilled, dogshit writers? Absolutely.
This is the problem, RPGM Maker is essentially the writer's equivalent of Febreeze on the ass of pants not washed in months. It slightly covers up the stench but doesn't actually do anything about it at the source, and of course it still stinks like ass.
A skilled writer COULD make the stories of these games work in other forms of media, but RPGM lets unskilled, uncreative writers get away with a lack of ability that no other medium is so forgiving towards.

Another truth you don't want to accept is that VNs suffer from the same "problem" of letting hack-ass writers get away with shit that they'd get laughed out of the room for pulling in actual respected forms of media.

What people seem to forget is that RPG Maker games back then played into the fact they were games a lot more than we realised. Being able to die or see unique perspectived through making the wrong choice was a unique way of gathering more context and understanding of the one correct story path that made certain scenes make mroe sense. Instead of a scene recontextualising something you'd already seen, you would have been catching onto the story's tricks, and in turn were rewarded with a tease of things to come, or knowledge that makes a scene you haven't even seen yet have a different tone with your insight. I don't think any of the popular RPG Maker Horror Games actually consciously took advantage of this, but it nonetheless was something that made them unique stories that could only be told in that medium.

You thought you were having sex with a highschooler werenโ€™t you Well, you were pounding an elementary schooler all along
>>713920050
>that VN
The most unforgettable horror porn game I've ever played. No other game had a bunch of elementary schoolers gangbang a teenage girl against a wall. And the teenage girl loved it. No other game I've played had a 17 year old bishonen guy drink a 14 year old girl's piss and chase her down the hall to rape her, only to wind up getting anally raped by a 32 year old fat man. I still remember the scene where a 16-17 girl was hiding under a bed as her same age best friend was having sex with that same 32 year old fat guy on top. She heard every moan, bed shake and sound. In the wrong end she was discovered under the bed by her friend and made to join. A most terrifying scene was when an unwilling girl relives another girl's sex memories. The girl in the memory consented but the reliving girl didn't. It didn't matter that she was mentally screaming, her body in the memory did all the motions and actions as in history. It's like mind control rape except the victim was fully aware. Another scene the same girl and a friend were almost raped in a magic sex ritual, saved by the girl's older sister, and the backlash made the older sister want to rape her younger sister and friend.

The loli in this pic is freakishly lewd and once disguised herself as a teenage girl, fucked a boy until he nearly came, transformed back saying
>You thought you were having sex with a highschooler weren't you? I'm an elementary schooler all along!
And leglocks that boy, forcing him to cum inside her unprotected, when he screams in fear upon learning this. This isn't even getting into the tentacles, the gay sex, the lesbian sex, the incest, the sequel's mother/daughter lesbian scene, etc. The first chapter alone contains lots of lesbian sex scenes with an unavoidable girl masturbating in the bathroom. Truly horror is intrinsically connected with sexuality.

Black Souls is basically Dark Souls but RPG Maker, like you can tell the level design is lifted from it 1:1 down to the castle and the dragon and the early super strong dragon weapon. Then you into Black Souls 2, having some lore knowledge of what's going on in the background of the first game and the start is unhinged as fuck, it is more Bloodborn if it makes any sense. There's more twisted shit and when you least expect it it throws a fucking jumpscare or legitimately creepy sequence and you're forever going to keep your guard up even if most of the game is a normal RPG adventure with branching decision making. You eventually learn or figure out some of the truths of the game and it can forever change the landscape becoming even more unhinged. The hospital level is really scary for no apparent reason. It is honestly well put together.

It literally doesn't. Every battle just has a psychadelic background with enemies being viewd head on. There's exactly 1 sprite in Mother 1 where a towering enemy is looking down at you, but he still takes up the same amount fo screen space as a normal enemy on a pure black background.

I wouldn't necessarily consider BS1&2 horror games because I feel the horror comes secondary to everything else. It's only there to further the game's dark and hopeless atmosphere (of which it does well), but the scary moments aren't the centrepiece like in a horror game. Aside from the occasional cheap jumpscare and what you've mentioned, there's:
>the Leaf's ring bad ends in 1
>the scene with Dormouse after filling all the prison cells in 2
>Victoria reverse raping you to death in 2, which occurs if you try to rape her and lose (not the jumpscare)
>the H scene that occurs when you lose to TCO in End G (i.e. the "unnamed bad ending")
Some of these are great, but generally speaking, I best enjoy the horror when it's kept subtle, like:
>the strangely violent lines of dialogue in Gerda's rape and service scenes that automatically scroll by
>the red line of text in the Chick's service H-scene at 0 SEN, which implies she remembers prior cycles
>SEN fuckery in general, of which there are dozens of examples
Vidrel is probably my favourite of these moments. In BS1, if you beat Leonard in Sabbath Forest, you can interact with Glinda's bookcase and summon Dorothy to give you some exposition. Afterwards, if you retreat from the cliff, you'll catch a glimpse of TCO having just been set free.

TCO was always free, you're just seeing it watch you from the edges of the garden. It does the same shit post-D in Jabber's room.

>improve visuals
But do the visuals need "improvement?"
I'm of the opinion that in most cases, they don't. Playing a game in a certain version of the RPG Maker engine contributes to the atmosphere. It's the SOVL that matters.

I love Undertale, but it is completely different than playing a horror RPGM game.

By having a prior fanbase prop a mediocre game up artificially, pushing it as the second coming of Christ and the Holy Family?

BS1 is not a particularly spooky game. There's a few things that'll probably catch you off guard but overall that's it.
BS2 still isn't what I would call a horror game, but it has a lot more in the way of horror elements overall, like having the Mental Ward/Nursing Graveyard areas and the VN segment, and SEN shit. >>713925209 talks about the dev message on horror in the game, and here's what he says about it if you're interested.

Q. Remove horror parts.
A. I'm sorry if it scared you, you're completely right.
It's the creator's bad taste. Please find the ability to compromise in your generous heart.
You are brave and strong, your soul more tenacious than you may think.
No matter what fear or malice comes for you, it cannot kill you.
Your conviction is true, and as long as you don't give up it will sweep away
any fog of nightmares and give you the power to keep advancing.
...However, if you find yourself tired, there's nothing wrong with seeking
solace in the embraces of the heroines. Rest your feet for now,
and one day you will conquer any challenge before you, that is what I believe.

Darkness Distortion is the latest game, and I'm pretty sure they abandoned Dead Patient.
I haven't played any of the games beyond Book of Shadows, but I don't think they will ever be able to release something that has the soul of the first game.

The games were better when they were more oldschool-occult and not this weird ass "witch with a giant scythe running around in lingerie" type of supernatural. The only characters I ever cared about were Ayumi and Yoshiki though, so I doubt I'll give a shit if Darkness Distortion ever comes out.

Sounds reasonable, I liked the general occult theme a lot.
Would you say the games beyond Book of Shadows are at least worth playing? The gameplay in Book of Shadows felt like a fucking chore, and the only part I actually enjoyed was the last chapter. The next game for me would be the Sachiko Birthday VN.
