the first game was "sort" of cool while it was tribespeople and mechadinos.
Once you start unraveling your origins and what was the "project zero dawn" then the lore of the game nose dives because again, ITS THE MOST RETARDED EXPLANATION ever put forth to try to explain an apocalyptic event.
But then, on a move that nobody could see coming Guerrilla Games manages to overdo themselves with the ending of the second one, an ending so stupid and devoid of substance that probably killed any interest on the franchise, despite Sony trying to shoehorn Aloy everywhere and claiming that HZD was a flagship franchise.

Aloy is able to hijack some of their tech and use it against them with the help of GAIA which is the pinacle of human's tech before humanity got wiped out, a super AI (portrayed as a black woman obv).

First the extinction event comes from robots that can repair and replicate themselves. Ok ill buy that even if the game portrays it in a very stupid way. The robots only need "energy" to keep repairing and replicating, one of the first units uses a pod of dolphins as said energy by putting them on a blender. No regard for supplies or anything, they just tell us they are unstopabble and we have to buy it. Obviously their creator has no idea and has to call Sobeck who takes 2 seconds to claim that the swarm is unstoppable and that we need to look for plan b.I mean literally 2 seconds, now that can be a videogames storytelling issue and we have to imagine that in the real world it took longer. Every leader in the world (except musk and his friends that flee to the sequel with NOBODY knowing it) is immediately on board on making the project Zero Dawn.
Now im not even gonna entertain explaining how ludicrous, how much of an ass pull and how much the game is asking you to just go with its bullshit the project is. You know perfectly well that shit is stretching the "science" in science fiction. And im already nearing 2k characters so i wont delve further onto it.

Aloy (the mc of the franchise) is a clone of the scientist that "saved" the planet a thousand (roughly) years before the events of the games.
The antagonists of the second game are an organization of 77 extremely wealthy billionaires who rejected the zero dawn project (the project the scientist Aloy is cloned from started to save humanity) and instead just jumped on a rocket and developed a colony on outer space (which eventually is what kickstarted the events of the first game).
Chance would have it that one of these people was an ex girlfriend of the woman Aloy is a clone of.

They also had to make another clone of Aloy's original for biometric reasons. As part of their plan is to steal GAIA (the aforementioned super advanced AI) who is biometrically locked to Aloy.
So her having to interact with that new clone probably made her remember Sobeck (Aloy original's name) fondly and then when she interacts with Aloy she eventually sways to her side. Its not played super romantically or anything until the very end. When she is trying to convince Aloy to leave Earth and start another colony on space. Aloy refuses and she says something like

She then pilots a gundam with and fights Aloy with the idea of kidnapping and stockholming her i assume, so you kill her
