Essentially Vietnam era gat. No more out of place than an AK or G3 wannabes.

Sure, I'd say firearms even up until when the original games were developed in the 1990s all fit.
What I don't think that fits, on the other hand, are modern "tacticool" weapons that became popular post-2000.
Something like an M4A1 or similar is fine, similar to some of the weapons already in the series even, but I don't want to see some AR-platform rifle covered in picattiny rails, cerakoted coyote brown, with an EOtech red dot sight, angled foregrip and laser sight. That shit belongs in Ghost Recon, not Fallout.

This is a franchise where you find posters for a Tool album and the 1992 film Tokyo Decadence, yet somehow the low iq nigger fanbase tricked itself into thinking that the world was in stasis from 1950 to 2077 and screech and shit themselves whenever reminded of the fact that they're incorrect and they don't understand the setting at all.
And this gets compounded with ignorance about firearms. Common "modern assault rifles" are all older than dirt than this point and were all designed during the mid 21st century -- being old even when Fallout 1 was released. The fanbase treats these old gun designs as haram yet can somehow suspend disbelief for wacky crazy energy weapons when there's zero precedence to do so within the franchise itself.

Modern weapons should be more common than WWI-WWII antiques. The lack of a transistor wouldn't hamper the development of the AR-15 which was designed without computerized tools. Even Todd-out 3's default assault rifle was based off the Next Generation Squad Weapon.

You get my point, you can have laser sights integrated in a cool way like they were in the '80s or '90s for instance, or you can have all the little flashlights/laser sights and so on that they throw on every modern rifle that's covered in rails. I'd rather go for the '80s-'90s action movie influence over tacticool shit.
FWIW when I do play the 3D Fallouts I typically mod in as many lore friendly "original" Fallout weapons that I can. It just seems that 90% of the player base of modern Fallout is only interested in tossing every single gun and asset from CoD: Modern Warfare into their game, however. It's annoying to have to trudge through all that shit.

I think something clever would be having the accessories on legacy guns resemble the stuff you see on energy weapons, like the laser sight clearly being derived from the same tech the pistol and rifle are.

I think it's fair to say that the guns shouldn't look exactly like modern guns. This is an alternate history so their guns should look a little different. That said, they're gonna land on similar solutions. The guns should look sensible but not recognizable.

the fallout cut off for technology isn't hard and fast, its all about vibes and looks.
M1913 rails don't feel fallout because they'd look weird in the original 2 games

Fallout 1/2 figured this out and you should follow their examples.
Although to be honest, my personal metric for the first person games is whether or not it would look weird being side by side with power armor

Technically we use the M4 now, but I couldn't tell you the difference.
And apparently the US is planning to switch to the XM5 soon.
They're concerned about advancements in body armor so they're switching to guns with bigger bullets. Although this also drops the magazine capacity pretty heavily.

The bombs dropped in 2077 during a period of time the Fallout US was going through a retro future '50s aesthetic revival. Even then, that aesthetic was fairly recent, and there would be plenty of non-retro future buildings, clothes, and technology of various types around. Not that you would know that from Bethesda's handling of the franchise.

irrelevant. even if you want to say all these references aren't canon to the games, you'd still be ignoring what the actual photos are.
This is a poster in fallout 2. that means it was a photo that was taken, of a japanese city that existed, there's a fashion, there's a font. "Tokyo Decadence" may not be literally a move in the universe, but this poster is.
Same with the Halle Berry or Tool posters. There was a photoshoot of some woman -- there's colored film and modern fashion. Or with Tool, some grungy photo done as a striking art piece and made into a poster.

looking at these things even dietetically, it still showcases things that are far off from the 1950s shtick the franchise became shackled to.

Generally, weapons beyond the 1980s or so should probably diverge from real life and resemble alternate history versions of themselves with some differing shapes and details. For me this isn't necessarily a matter of "too modern" but more like "too familiar". Weird prototypes are a good place for inspiration, even modern stuff, I think the General Dynamics entry for NGSW would be fun to have. I'd also like to see more original designs (with the obvious caveat of them not being ugly like the FO4 assault rifle). I want a good mix of real world designs, original designs, and things in between.
Modders should also try weathering their modern gun mods so they don't look like they came fresh out of the factory and stick out like a sore thumb.
