It was extremely innovative for a 3D adventure game and there was nothing else like it. It spawned an entire generation of games trying to play like it. The pacing is also perfect. There is no filler unlike it's successors, although MM is close.

People thought it was the greatest game ever made because they literally only had an N64 and no other consoles.
