They treat you like shit and insult you even if you are idolized by them. There is no subtlety where you meet some nice guys among them or gain their respect. They don't have little personal stories and sideplots where you get to know them like the NCR people, they only exist to be assholes you kill. That is why almost all of them wear masks in typical generic villain fashion.
Joining them is akin to just being a murder-hobo and cutting out most of the game.
