I've looked for mods for this game and it's very scarce. Genuinely asking, because if there are actually a lot of them out there I might be looking in the wrong places.

There's a couple source mods out there like Openfotress which is TF2 but quake and TF2 Classic which is like tf2 circa 2009 but from an alternate universe
both are a lot of fun but not as populated, you generally have to wait for weekends to find servers that aren't just 24/7's. iirc both (tf2c for sure) to release on steam as official free products after valve gave out the TF2 SDK earlier this year

I can only guess at an answer -- when options were limited, each class had very specific strengths and weaknesses (with some fuzzy edges, provided by the few alternate loadouts). Now, when there're a billion options, the capabilities of each class are much less distinguishable; when you encounter an enemy, you have no idea what he's capable of -- there are simply too many possibilities.
Basically what I think I'm saying is that the game is less coherent. The classes have less of an identity.

i would disagree with that though because the unlocks added after each class got their updates (i assume that's what that original anon was referring to) haven't branched out beyond that with only a few exceptions

that's probably true, personally though I really dislike the grenades in TFC. Too spammy and no animation makes them really annoying to play against

Nothing will ever replace the peak freak fortress 2 days.

TF2 should've stopped getting updates ages ago and it would've been a better game for it. Too many weapons in the sandbox that don't have a real purpose muddying up the core gameplay. Even the shit/useless/goofball weapons are a problem because people still use them. It's not a lot of fun when you join the team and you've got people running around with meme loadouts being absolutely useless to the team.

"Balancing" TF2 is kind of a moot point now since the problem isn't so much that some weapons are broken or just need to be touched up, but more that many weapons just shouldn't exist at all and now they've put themselves in this situation where they need to clean up their own mess and it's not like they can just remove the offending weapons. The more weapons that fall into this category, the more difficult this becomes exponentially.

Well, I guess that's what mods are for. I should look into what people are doing since they released the Source tools or whatever.

Thing about Demo is that while he has a decently low skill-floor, he has a skill ceiling even higher than Sniper. Although i'd argue it's more intuition ceiling of knowing when and where to fire pipes and place traps.
He has the potential to dominate the entire enemy team while being impossible to take down.

I never understand arguments like this. You can get kills against morons in all kinds of ways. W+M1ing is a very easy way to get kills, but if you're skilled, you'll be able to kill a pyro that tries to do that to you. Dying to spam is something that shouldn't happen if you're skilled enough.

Have 4k hours on the game, but most of that is from 2011-2016. Still play the game these days, but it's for like a week or two before I drop the game again until next year. Most of my time was spent on custom gamemodes like freak fortress, randomizer, and those Mario kart maps. But all of the servers I used to play on are either dead, or deleted, and none of my friends from those days play the tf2 anymore, or play console games now instead of PC games. When I do play these days it's entirely casual mode valve servers.

i agree there's a lot of weapon bloat, two examples are like the sun on a stick or the southern hospitality which just fill inventories and see no real usage, but people will try and scheme ways to make them viable all while just muddying what's there like you said. I think there are weapons that are worth using though, sidegrades that could use some tweaking and the game would be a lot better for it
