Literally what the fuck was even his purpose? Was he meant to do something more and they were just rushed and never got around to implementing it?
>People still getting filtered by Ned Starks in 2025.
>>713935456 (OP)He is the build up for both Verso and Renoir and the theme of grieving. Maelle even explicitly says she doesn't know whether he's her father or brother but rather both guiding her. The game is usually more subtle but they wanted retards to get it.
He's also necessary to ground Maelle in the world and give more reason to her woman moment. In addition he serves as a story and gameplay mean of preparing players to pick the good (Verso) ending.
His entire existence is to give Maelle character. Same as Zack from FF7.
>>713935456 (OP)>Was he meant to do something more and they were just rushedstay in school, anon.
You can spot retards easily when they say Gustave is a good character. Dude was the most white meat plain character of all time. Dude had 2 catch phrases he spammed non stop so trannies could cry and say b-b-but what about those who come after omg his death broke me.
>>713935456 (OP)He exists so your expectations can be subverted later when the story changes from something different than initially presented. You need Gustave to tell the initial story. Sciel on the other hand could have been removed and nothing would change with the game.
his purpose was to bind maelle emotionally to the fake world
god i fucking hate zoomers and late millenials so much it's insane
Shame that they couldn't be arsed to give him weapon skills. Yeah I know why it's because they didn't want to piss people off when Verso takes all of his weapons and has different skills on them but it was pretty clear from his complete lack of weapon skills that something was going to happen to him
>>713938006I was a brainlet so I didn't think about it.
>>713938006>it was pretty clear from his complete lack of weapon skillsNot really? He has like two slots less than everybody else. And it could be that later ones are unlocked some other way or you could use those points for something else.
>>713938006He has enough of a tech tree. Usually MC are railroaded into DPS roles but it made sense for his character to have him as the utility party member.

>>713938380>>713938472I'm talking about the actual skills on weapons. You know shit like Lune getting random stains when she shoots enemies or Maelle giving everyone else AP when she gains AP in Defense mode that are attached to the weapons themselves

>>713935456 (OP)He's there to ground the painted world. Maelle was born into it and (You) are too, through Gustave. It's to make the Verso ending, if you choose it, actually difficult. >>713952807After seeing 3 grandparents reach the age of 90+, I don't blame him. All kept decades old cards from friends by their bedsides.
>>713952379Except what would normally define fiction in our world doesn't apply to them. It's not him saying for her to get off the damn video games. It's not traditional escapism. When you have godlike power and you're dealing effectively with real people 1:1 it's not that simple. Versofags will never understand this despite not knowing who Verso was until 40% into the game.
>>713953261You always have issues with definitions. You don't even know what a woman is.
We all know your ilk, man. You're an old story, you're an old issue.
>>713953261>Except what would normally define fiction in our world doesn't apply to them.lol wut? the term doesn't change based on the setting. he knows he isn't real and that alone makes the whole situation revolve around the immutable truth that his world is a farce even at its best.
preserving the canvas would make a lot more sense as a balanced ending if it wasn't so obvious that maelle was going to kill herself, and the fact that it just prolongs the inevitable.
>>713953661Ah yes, I disagree, therefore I am a tranny. That must be it. It isn't that you've been given every indication that the Lumierans, despite their supposed artifice, are identical to humans in every single way save for their creation. It therefore goes that if one were to say, have doubts or even outright reject the idea of deleting them, they must be a tranny. God this board is so fucking brainbroken.
>>713953731He isn't the real VERSO. He's a painted COPY of a real person. It's different for everyone else. Lune or Sciel or Gustave MIGHT be based on real people Aline knows in her "waking" setting, but that's never confirmed. That's my steelman theory to hardcore versofags at least: they're based on people she knows.
>>713935456 (OP)If he was present a good ending would've been possible. His purpose is how his absence and Verso letting him die ruined everything.
>>713953796I just said you have issues with definitions. And that's not something new, that is something very old in fact.
So much of this world is battle of these definitions.
If you were to create a video game, and in that video game create characters powered by in-game AI so developed that it is in many ways indistinguishable from human, would that mean that the video game world is real? No of course. It's a fantasy world nonetheless. You can go to a fantasy world right now in fact, in your own mind.
>>713950295I can do you one better. Based Netanyahu
>>713953921>He isn't the real VERSO. He's a painted COPY of a real person. It's different for everyone elsewhen did I say he's real? you are actually retarded, anon, and this doesn't change the context of the situation at all.
>>713954018Would it be real if you were born into it in the same way a real person is? There's a reason she's "32" i.e she's spent 16 in the "real" world and 16 in the painted one. There isn't even a real world comparison. The best you could say is it's like time-travel dimension fuckery. Just accept that in the world of CO reality is not as concrete as you make it out to be.
>>713954105>There's a reason she's "32" i.e she's spent 16 in the "real" world and 16 in the painted one.Time doesn't translate equally between the realms, otherwise Aline and Renoir would be well into their hundreds. Spend 30 seconds thinking about something before posting.
>>713953261Verso is the correct choice under the circumstances. It's too bad most who blindly pick him fail to understand and take responsibility for what they are choosing to do.
>>713954062>he knows he isn't real and that alone makes the whole situation revolve around the immutable truth that his world is a farce even at its best. Again, resorting to name calling when I didn't even refute what you said. Of course if you were a copy of another person, with forcefully implanted memories, and not even being loved or accepted by the people your memories show you loving, you'd probably be suicidal and hate the world too.
>"You are not my Verso!" >"Please accept the Dessendre family's apologies." He's treated like a fucking NPC even though he has to feel his parent's love through memories. He's just some fucking dude to them. Imagine living your life and seeing your parents and they just treat you like a bug in their code.
>>713954270>Again, resorting to name callingoh fuck off, retard.
>>713954105I very specifically said fantasy world. It's a fantasy world, regardless of who is in it. Again, you are a human, you can go to a fantasy world RIGHT NOW, in your own mind, which would mean in that fantasy world there is now a real human being, but the fantasy world is a fantasy world nonetheless.
>reality is not as concrete as you make it out to be.Like i said, you have issues with definitions. You should have just said yes and that's it.
The Verso ending is the superior choice, not because I care about Verso, but because it means the genocide of thousands of French people
>>713954258>>713953261It's also funny since even Renoir understands that the painted people are in fact people and that killing them is wronging them. He simply prioritizes the lives of his wife and daughter over theirs. Which no honest person can fault him for.
They hear "fake" and immediately take that to mean "doesn't matter", in spite of all the evidence the game presented to the contrary.
>>713945084The best part of him admitting he let Gustave die on purpose was you can tell Maelle isn't getting mad because she's thinking "damn now I don't feel so bad for gommaging your Alicia right in front of you"
>>713954236>>713954294Alright, I'm throwing civility out the window since you both want to be such a pompous fucking faggots.
Her ACTUAL age is irrelevant. She spent 16 HYPERBOLIC TIME CHAMBER YEARS in the canvas. So her lived experiences total 32 years. If time didn't actually matter then Verso being 100 years old or the gommage happening to each successive generation wouldn't either. They literally discuss logistical issues with the "last generation". Neither would aging period. Verso is a homunculus and hates himself for it, but thinks it's appropriate to kill everyone else who isn't.
>>713954258>>713954470These guys are actually honest. It's not an easy choice, or it wouldn't matter. God you fucking dickheads can't ever just have a disagreement without being such pompous fucking douchebags.
Why are so many incapable of admitting that they will prioritize the life of an individual over the lives of many in this specific circumstance?
I agree that it's the marginally better choice with how things ended up, but they seem to be missing the point of why it's a choice at all.
>>713935456 (OP)He was supposed to reach a happy ending, but Verso letting him die made that impossible and only left bittersweet or outright bad outcomes to the story
>>713954887I think most players don't perceive the lives as equals. A false reality.
>>713935456 (OP)>Literally what the fuck was even his purpose?Poor game design. He dies so early in the game that it's almost comical they made him the initial main character. You play him too long to be just a tutorial character and too little to give a flying fuck about him dying.
>>713955223I cared about him dying. His death and Verso's ending were the only moments which made me feel something.
>>713954573>Her ACTUAL age is irrelevant. She spent 16 HYPERBOLIC TIME CHAMBER YEARS in the canvas. So her lived experiences total 32 yearsshe went from 0-16 outside

>>713955202Which is especially weird since most of the game is spent making it clear that yes they are people. The painting is effectively a pocket dimension with created inhabitants.
Then they hear specific terms and immediately it's like a dehumanization switch is flipped and they stop caring about them completely.
Expedition 33/100.
Also, why did Renoir not just fucking kill everyone at any point ever? He .killed people effortlessly but the party just gets to run around for ages? So fucking stupid
>>713955429>dehumanization switchBingo. It's like one thing to be begrudgingly like "Well, I think it's what Verso would've wanted", to being like "lol their liek npcs lol their not even real xD" when they literally played the fucking game. Did you motherfuckers not feel anything in the intro?

>>713956279Why would I entertain an argument that boils down to "lel they fake nothing matters"?
There's strong arguments for Verso's ending, but most people who choose him don't seem to understand and accept what they are choosing to do.
My main argument for it would be that someone capable of creating such worlds is ultimately more important than a single one and it's inhabitants. They could go on to create dozens if not hundreds of such worlds instead of festering and dying with a single one.
That doesn't make destroying that one world okay though, and the fact that it came to that can and frankly should haunt said creator for the rest of their life, especially if they could've prevented the situation by simply being more reasonable. Verso is only forcing that matter because it's clear Maelle will be staying until she dies.

How do you even determine that the painted world is fake from a philosophical standpoint? They live in a 3d world with landscapes, people, creatures, culture. They independent thoughts and emotions, or at least feel as though they do, and they use science, art, and religion to help them understand the world they live in, and how it is built from chroma, lumina, etc. Just as ours is built from atoms, energy, quarks, whatever else.
Is it the explicit knowledge that the world was created by the imagination of thinking beings that makes it fake? If so, do Christians, who literally believe that our world was imagined into existence by God, also believe that our world is fake and not real?
Do we understand enough about the fundamental nature of reality to determine that our world is real? It's only real from our point of observation as the consciousness that inhabits it, just as theirs is to them. For all we know, even if there is no God, we could still exist as nothing more than a quantum probability table within a higher dimensional existence that we could have no hope of ever understanding. Would that make our world fake?

>>713935456 (OP)>Gustav's purpose. This anon
>>713936614 sums it up quite well, but people also seem to forget that Gustave made the Lumina Converter, which is the reason we can convert pictos into lumina to gain their skills. Previous expedition could only use 3 pictos and had a clear power ceiling. (Didn't stop the real chads from getting through).
>>713935456 (OP)The point was to make you care about the painting people so the end decision has weight
>>713978405Because it highlights how retarded you are?
>>713978457>le slopI don't even need to say anything in response; just kill yourself. Swiftly.
>>713980209Lol, okay. I know this is bait and you're another rerard jeet, but sure. Hollow Knight would be a good starting place for you.

>>713982007Your question is not deserving of answer retard
>>713982149I didn't ask a question, holy ESL. I was joking at first, but you actually are a jeet, aren't you?
>>713982347Shut the fuck up and dont reply
>>713938006He had a bunch of locked skills I figured he'd unlock for a big power boost as some point.
I was actually surprised when Maelle didn't bring him back along with Lune and Sciel.
>>713981548very telling of you to invoke midwittery so quickly but then immediately become hostile and give a non answer when you're simply asked to share your own tastes. you should have more confidence in your assertions.
>>713951142He does, but he care's more about his family so when he's made to choose he puts them first.
>>713982770lol u type like a faggot
>>713935456 (OP)Killing off a main character is how you signal to midwits that your writing is smart and mature
>>713982841fr fr no cap twin
>>713983014Why didn't it work when Joel got Ned Starked?
>>713955839Kind of undermines choosing Verso's ending if you don't feel at least a little bad about it desu, he's doing something horrible in the name of love, it's very emotionally powerful.
>>713974432Writers probably pulled from Baudrillard's concept of Hyperreality.
>>713979213They hate the Verso ending because it's putting your loved ones first, scaled up Verso is literally Hitler putting the German people above the needs and wants of international finance, erasing the painting to save Maelle from her grief is morally equivalent to the holocaust.
>>713945084Yeah Verso let his greatest ally die for nothing. Gustave would've been 100% on his side after coming back from the Gommage.
>>713986787No, Verso knows that unlike him, Gustave was not a brainlet. He would've found a way to keep the painting and help the Dessendre's grieve.
We see that although he's a clever engineer, he's not emotionally blind like Lune for example. The guy was mature and knows about grieving from how he interacts with people and Verso, the idiot that he is, sees Gustave as a threat to his mass suicide plan.
>>713984826So does that mean chuds hate the Maelle ending because they can't cope with the possibility that the painted world residents are living beings? Because as a supposed chud I think if it weren't for bringing Verso back it would have been more comparable. Why should I put the lives of the antagonists over characters I've spent the whole game with?
>>713987213>Kill all these very real people so a family can learn to grieve>Plus Alicia MUST live as a mute scarred cripplePeople chosing Verso's ending are contrarians or retards. Clea and Renoir would 100% do the same shit if two gods are destroying their world over a marital spat.
>>713987381Thing is that I still do thing one could argue the Verso ending is the better one overall. Point is more that neither can really be called 'good' endings. I do feel like the game writers went overboard by having Verso brought back in Maelle's, because if not for that it'd probably be thought of as a better ending. As it's portrayed though it has a more grim atmosphere compared to Verso's.
>>713987663Its fine because Verso gets to die of old age in a perfect world. His whole deal is how Aline won't let him die because she cant bear to lose her son again.
And unlike Aline, Alicia doesnt need to be in the real world. Remember, Clea and Renoir wanting Aline back is because she's the best paintress against the writers and they need her back. Alicia is the runt of the family, they dont need her skillset in the real world. Let her live in a world where she's happy and not a cripple. They can always visit anyway.
>>713987213Some people cope by dehumanizing them to the remove moral weight from their own decision but Verso clearly views the paintings inhabitants as sentient beings and is simply putting Maelle's life over theirs.
The player doesn't come into the thought process behind the characters, even if you as a chud would rather save Lumiere, you should be at least somewhat sympathetic to the difficult position Verso is in.
>>713935456 (OP)Once you realize no one is actually a person besides Maelle you need to start examine what they represent through her eyes. he meant nothing because he wasn't actually a person, but he was real to Maelle, and losing him tied her more to the overall themes of loss and grief.
>cheater
I feel called out. Stendahl is retarded
>>713980692Why are genetic deadends so obsessed with other genetic deadends, with axewounds? LOL!
>>713988495Level 70 is late to fight this one, but that means you went level 70 before doubling your turns.

>>713935456 (OP)you guys still saying his death is meaningless proved that the game succeed in the plan. The game is about dealing with grief. You're grieifing; stage denial anger confusion.
>>713963516I don't like that this isn't some stupid bad faith post, but something that accurately describes tons of people.
>>713988241>he wasn't actually a personYou're stupid.
>>713935456 (OP)What is it with redditors and le rushed meme? It's like you know 3 things about game development: being rushed is bad, that engines exist (but you have no fucking clue what they are), and that the word "design" has some place in game dev.
>>713990715op is likely a maellefag, which means he is 90% sure to be a zoomer that never dealt with grief before, that's why
>>713935456 (OP)Shock value.
Classic hackfraud writing tactic.
>>713990973On the other hand, if everyone could get that, there would me much less to talk about. A lot of discussions are about which of the two endings is good. Those discussions wouldn't be possible then, because everyone would finally understand that both endings were deliberately made to be bad and only by assuming a specific point of view you can say that one is slightly less bad than the other. But then, you assume a different point of view and realise that now the positions have been reversed.
So to summarise: we have a lot of threads because people are stupid or - I'll try being optimistic here - just refuse to think, because they're afraid of proving themselves wrong. And It's a Good Thing.โข
>>713992050People mostly dislike confronting the reality that it is in normal- even smart and efficient- to cut out things that don't work instead of spending more and more time and resources to make something that adds little substance at best and detracts from an experience at worst. See: people clamoring over unused ideas in concept art books for years and years.
>>713935456 (OP)He's a famous actor to draw attention to the game. Shame too because he was the best voice actor in the game.

>>713993371what are his catchphrases? I don't remember him having catchphrases.
>>713935456 (OP)his purpose was to die and get replaced by a brooding clone that lies every chance he gets
>>713993850jeepers i hope claire doesn't find this too obscure
>>713977938Exactly, the point is that they're sentient beings inside of that painting
Verso was just an asshole
>>713992492His French VA is so goddamn good too, better tham the english one. Its like they hired the best VA for Gustave and Renoir (who is voiced by a more famous actor). Maybe Maelle has a better VA, especially once she's Alicia again (in French at least)
>>713992492He did great but letโs not pretend English and Starr arenโt the twoโฆ stars.
>>713935456 (OP)He exists literally just to give E33-tards something to talk about and pretend had emotional resonance.
>>713935456 (OP)>Literally what the fuck was even his purpose?> hey look we hired Daredevil!also
> hey look what if we made the main character... le die because he wasnt the main character?
>>713993850When one falls, we continue.
For those who come after.
>>713987094The Gustave rimming is still big.
He was a good engineer, but he wasnt smart. He didnt run when Renoir appeared, he didnt plan around him even seeing that they were outmatched, and he was as emotionally versed as anyone else as he was just a normal dude raised on a world that its going to die.
Gustave only existed to make retards say that Maelle was justified in drugging herself to death like her mother.
>>713995378Those aren't his catchphrases, those are mantras shared by all the expeditioners.
>>713994549I also played in French and Renoir is the best actor even though they are good to great performances all around. Esquie is also perfectly cast, it's a meme role which could have gone sour easily but he made it work.
>>713995526AKA his fucking catchphrases you retard. Its all he ever has to say. He says it in almost every cutscene. Because he has 0 character

>>713998383you didn't play the game because they come across a couple having sex before she gets destroyed
so the devs of the game are also sex addicted incels, according to you
>>713999539Gustave and Sophie were not like that and she has a fun tone when commenting on the sounds coming ut of the hotel. In addition they were not together for a while and just rejoined for a brief moment before her death. It would have taken their entire time together to get busy.
>>713999539>One easter egg that you must get out of your way to find>One couple did it so EVERYONE must do itBy your coomer logic the whole port area should be an orgy.

>>713984826I'm a leftist and I did the Maelle ending without any second thought. You sure you're not one of the good guys?
>>714006762>I'm a leftist Commit suicide. Liberate yourself.
>>713955394E33 doesn't have a main character, it is what is known as an "ensemble cast" between Gustave, Verso and Maelle, which is why they each get an act.
>>713935554Is that Tony Stark's father? What does capeshit have to do with video games?
>>713983314Because it was done by a big strong (literally she was on steroids) woman so there was clearly something foul afoot.
