He is the build up for both Verso and Renoir and the theme of grieving. Maelle even explicitly says she doesn't know whether he's her father or brother but rather both guiding her. The game is usually more subtle but they wanted retards to get it.
He's also necessary to ground Maelle in the world and give more reason to her woman moment. In addition he serves as a story and gameplay mean of preparing players to pick the good (Verso) ending.

When you have godlike power and you're dealing effectively with real people 1:1 it's not that simple. Versofags will never understand this despite not knowing who Verso was until 40% into the game.

preserving the canvas would make a lot more sense as a balanced ending if it wasn't so obvious that maelle was going to kill herself, and the fact that it just prolongs the inevitable.

He isn't the real VERSO. He's a painted COPY of a real person. It's different for everyone else. I just said you have issues with definitions. And that's not something new, that is something very old in fact.
So much of this world is battle of these definitions.
If you were to create a video game, and in that video game create characters powered by in-game AI so developed that it is in many ways indistinguishable from human, would that mean that the video game world is real? No of course. It's a fantasy world nonetheless. You can go to a fantasy world right now in fact, in your own mind.

There isn't even a real world comparison. The best you could say is it's like time-travel dimension fuckery. Just accept that in the world of CO reality is not as concrete as you make it out to be.

It's also funny since even Renoir understands that the painted people are in fact people and that killing them is wronging them. He simply prioritizes the lives of his wife and daughter over theirs. Which no honest person can fault him for.

Alright, I'm throwing civility out the window since you both want to be such a pompous fucking faggots.

Her ACTUAL age is irrelevant. She spent 16 HYPERBOLIC TIME CHAMBER YEARS in the canvas. So her lived experiences total 32 years. If time didn't actually matter then Verso being 100 years old or the gommage happening to each successive generation wouldn't either. They literally discuss logistical issues with the "last generation". Neither would aging period. Verso is a homunculus and hates himself for it, but thinks it's appropriate to kill everyone else who isn't.

Why would I entertain an argument that boils down to "lel they fake nothing matters"?
There's strong arguments for Verso's ending, but most people who choose him don't seem to understand and accept what they are choosing to do.
My main argument for it would be that someone capable of creating such worlds is ultimately more important than a single one and it's inhabitants. They could go on to create dozens if not hundreds of such worlds instead of festering and dying with a single one.
That doesn't make destroying that one world okay though, and the fact that it came to that can and frankly should haunt said creator for the rest of their life, especially if they could've prevented the situation by simply being more reasonable. Verso is only forcing that matter because it's clear Maelle will be staying until she dies.

How do you even determine that the painted world is fake from a philosophical standpoint? They live in a 3d world with landscapes, people, creatures, culture. They independent thoughts and emotions, or at least feel as though they do, and they use science, art, and religion to help them understand the world they live in, and how it is built from chroma, lumina, etc. Just as ours is built from atoms, energy, quarks, whatever else.

Is it the explicit knowledge that the world was created by the imagination of thinking beings that makes it fake? If so, do Christians, who literally believe that our world was imagined into existence by God, also believe that our world is fake and not real?

Do we understand enough about the fundamental nature of reality to determine that our world is real? It's only real from our point of observation as the consciousness that inhabits it, just as theirs is to them. For all we know, even if there is no God, we could still exist as nothing more than a quantum probability table within a higher dimensional existence that we could have no hope of ever understanding. Would that make our world fake?

Thing is that I still do thing one could argue the Verso ending is the better one overall. Point is more that neither can really be called 'good' endings. I do feel like the game writers went overboard by having Verso brought back in Maelle's, because if not for that it'd probably be thought of as a better ending. As it's portrayed though it has a more grim atmosphere compared to Verso's.

Its fine because Verso gets to die of old age in a perfect world. His whole deal is how Aline won't let him die because she cant bear to lose her son again.
And unlike Aline, Alicia doesnt need to be in the real world. Remember, Clea and Renoir wanting Aline back is because she's the best paintress against the writers and they need her back. Alicia is the runt of the family, they dont need her skillset in the real world. Let her live in a world where she's happy and not a cripple. They can always visit anyway.

Some people cope by dehumanizing them to the remove moral weight from their own decision but Verso clearly views the paintings inhabitants as sentient beings and is simply putting Maelle's life over theirs.

On the other hand, if everyone could get that, there would me much less to talk about. A lot of discussions are about which of the two endings is good. Those discussions wouldn't be possible then, because everyone would finally understand that both endings were deliberately made to be bad and only by assuming a specific point of view you can say that one is slightly less bad than the other. But then, you assume a different point of view and realise that now the positions have been reversed.
So to summarise: we have a lot of threads because people are stupid or - I'll try being optimistic here - just refuse to think, because they're afraid of proving themselves wrong. And It's a Good Thing.β„’

People mostly dislike confronting the reality that it is in normal- even smart and efficient- to cut out things that don't work instead of spending more and more time and resources to make something that adds little substance at best and detracts from an experience at worst. See: people clamoring over unused ideas in concept art books for years and years.

His French VA is so goddamn good too, better tham the english one. Its like they hired the best VA for Gustave and Renoir (who is voiced by a more famous actor). Maybe Maelle has a better VA, especially once she's Alicia again (in French at least)

The Gustave rimming is still big.
He was a good engineer, but he wasnt smart. He didnt run when Renoir appeared, he didnt plan around him even seeing that they were outmatched, and he was as emotionally versed as anyone else as he was just a normal dude raised on a world that its going to die.
Gustave only existed to make retards say that Maelle was justified in drugging herself to death like her mother.

I also played in French and Renoir is the best actor even though they are good to great performances all around. Esquie is also perfectly cast, it's a meme role which could have gone sour easily but he made it work.

Gustave and Sophie were not like that and she has a fun tone when commenting on the sounds coming ut of the hotel. In addition they were not together for a while and just rejoined for a brief moment before her death. It would have taken their entire time together to get busy.

E33 doesn't have a main character, it is what is known as an "ensemble cast" between Gustave, Verso and Maelle, which is why they each get an act.
