The eShop requires credit cards from that region only so if you live in Japan, can't read Japanese but still want things digitally you'd have to buy the voucher codes at retail whether its digital games, eShop credit or switch online digital vouchers
This then leads to what happens if you travel or move abroad? You can use carts you buy anywhere and the games would be running in those languages(reminder: your system main menu is permanently in Japanese) but are screwed if you need to do anything digitally like renewing your Switch Online and Expansion Pack.
Source: Resident who lives in Japan that has a US account and looked into any possible benefit of just getting one at retail here but was forced to essentially import it from NoA.
I can read Japanese just fine but it's still not my native language at the end of the day so when I am playing games I don't want to have to be in "translation" mode.
