Gran Turismo 2 on PS1 had a soul, it's the kino of all racing games.
GT3 on PS2 had better graphics but it felt soulless.
GT4 was just a empty husk, all magic was lost.
Didn't play the sequels for long for that reason.

As a fan of mostly rally games, and with the exception of RBR, most rally games are better these days. Sure, old Colin McRae games were fun but they were super casual. Even dumb official WRC games are better than most rally games from back in the day. And I'm just talking about gameplay of course, not the graphics because they are obviously better now.

The Fat Era where all cars drove like they're ice skates floating on a sea of butter sucked. All games of the PS2-PS3 generation had it. GT, Forza, NFS, all of them are like controlling a puck on an air hockey table because Fast & Furious came out and it became more important to get cool slides than it was to make fun cars that drive realistically

I only liked nfs hot pursuit because of the variety of tracks with tons of different themes and scenery. Also because of the race customization; you can race with just ferrari if you want, and also any number of racers with any number of laps. The music tracks also sounded great while racing sports cars on scenic roads.

I remember that bonus disc, man. Booting it up felt like unlocking a secret arcade machine in your living room. Blue Solvalou at 60fps was straight-up butter - you'd feel every drift like it was a rhythm game. Nobody talks enough about how R4 nailed both the vibe and the tight controls. If you couldn't sub-minute on Phantomile Speedway, you were still on training wheels.

It could be done but its hardly working as intended.
The second you lose traction its like they push the clutch in half way, you cant powerslide. You basically have to use the cars momentum alone to drift.
gt3 had actual physics so you could open the throttle while sliding and do donuts.
what gt4 did well was the number of tracks and the massive library of cars. shit what other game had a lotus carlton?

The main problem is the primitive tyre model resulting in really sudden changes in grip, namely the front will always regain grip way too fast while you're countersteering, resulting in your car suddenly changing direction and sending you into the nearest wall. I don't understand why they introduced D1GP cars to the game, you can't drift unless you do major setup fuckery
>>713973186
Notice how you had to correct mid corner at 0:09, that's the extent of drifting you can achieve in GT4, if you had kept countersteering you'd have spun out in the opposite direction

NFS Hot Pursuit 2010 is right up your alley, if you can bear brake-to-drift, a very barebones open world (in the sense that there's nothing for you to do but cruise, the map is frankly amazing with lots of cool and diverse vistas) and it being more of a Burnout than a NFS.

Definitely worth a pirate. I saw many games like that with shitty reviews, gave them a go and they sometimes clicked with me.
But be warned, just like almost every other official WRC game before that, it suffers from some stutter here and there. I literally had that in WRC games since WRC 3. Went through 4 different PC's since then, went back to old games, and they still perform like shit.

I started Forza Motorsport a couple days ago and it might have the worst racing AI in all of history and that's not an exaggeration.
The AI is completely incapable of passing. The car behind you will always brake and give you at least 3 car lengths of lead. It's completely insane
and then if you turn up the difficulty, the front 3 racers will just start ignoring physics and put up literal impossible lap times for their car and class. but the rest of the field? nah they are still slow and shit.
but get in front of the leader and he'll slow down for you too. It's mindblowingly shit. like it wasn't even fucking tested

Why do /v/tards cry about difficulty in racing games, but don't touch racing sims where the only way to get better is to autistically practice a single track with a single car for tens of hours.
Not only that, every single person you race will be on the same track and in the same car. There is no meta. You MUST drive better than your opponents.

Btw Rush Rally 3 is surprisingly fun while also lightweight for your system, and its not too hard to play either. And its not too autistic with driving. Its definitely more arcadey than a sim.

you gotta be more specific about how sim you want to go and what kind of Motorsports you like.
I think Dirt Rally 2 is excellent but that's only if you want to do rally and nothing else. Forza is probably the worst "simcade" racer on the market but it certainly has the most cars if that's what you care about.
ACC is getting closer to sim racecraft and I hear it's playable on a gamepad but probably still not ideal

I wish I could be more specific but I have not played anything so I don't know what I want yet. I just know I've recently burned through stuff like F-Zero, Wipeout, Jet Moto, Hydro Thunder, Pod Racer, then started to lean closer to more grounded stuff and really enjoyed Colin MacRae 2. I have fond memories of like, NFSU2 when I was a kid? I just don't know where to begin with simcade stuff because its overwhelming.

I guess I might as well just go down the list and start with GT2.

Yeah GT games are probably a good start. Lots of people seem to be into the F1 games and I can't tell if they are actually good or if it's just the popularity of the sport, but if you have any interest in F1 maybe look at those. For as real as it is, F1 cars are the closest thing to Wipeout and F Zero that really exists. You drive those cars unlike any other real car. It kinda does feel arcadey at times because of that

-Japanese voice acting during the races

couldn't be more soulful. I had 10x more fun with it than MK World, Forza Horizon, Gran Turismo, etc.

Because the PS1 port was a launch title and released before Sony even HAD an analog controller. Namco's own Negcon was the first one on the system to have it and their systems were used by later games to support both it and racing wheels that often used the Negcon protocol rather than the Dual Analog.

GX is good. IIRC some of the TOCA games have 20+ cars as well, and the first Grid usually has a dozen or 16 cars on the grid (heh) in later races. Also multi class racing with 20+ cars but that doesn't really count since it's at Le Mans and they all disappear after the first corner.

I loved STUNTS (the dos game) though, probably the only game I could play for hours just jerking stuff around, without feeling like I was wasting my time (maybe NFS Hot Pursuit from 2010 comes close:)
good times
>>713988367
HP2010 excellent game alright, once you got the hang of it you just go flat out and tap handbrake to drift (for some cars letting off the gas also works but it's overall slower)
I've seen some people diddle xml files and stuff to make new races (start, finish, weather, opponents?) but haven't really looked into it
the only drawback of the game, apart from the relatively low number of 'missions' (races... I mean 1 race with each car type? cmon could have used a career mode...) is the lack of more detailed (and persistent) race statistics

So, I've got the GT2 A-Spec mod running with the widescreen and LOD hacks to spruce it up a smidge and I am enjoying it a ton. The dad rock surprised me. Idk why but I was expecting an almost nondescript, ambient or synth heavy soundtrack. ACC is Assetto Corsa, right? Is Evo good or should I stick to Competizione? Gonna try Dirt Rally. Tons of anons across a bunch of threads have recommended it now. Hoping it gives me the same vibe as Colin MacRae - its my gold standard now. I had a ton of fun with it.

How is Project Cars?

I think the decline of the genre is less from the vidya industry and more that manufacturers are killing off their performance models and trims and just going all in on crossover slop and EVs

Just look at Jaguar for sake

The unique system is a fleshed out pitching/gliding system rather than the relatively primitive ones in every Wipeout title. Pitching even influences turn radius and rate, a well designed track that forces you to use pitching to a large degree is often one of the most fun tracks to play.

Why are modern racing games such slop? You start the game, and it instantly gives you some 500 horsepower beast after 5 minutes. Zoomers will never understand the grind of racing a shitty stock Corolla and failing, then trying to scrounge up 50 bucks for a new transmission. Thats why no one at Fortune 500 companies like hiring zoomies. You gotta understand the grind. When my son grows up, hes not playing these instant gratification games on his phone.

depends how nice the scenery is e.g. Seacrest Tour in NFSHP2010 takes between 10 and 20 minutes depending on skill and it's majestic
IRL that would be something like the Nurburgring or Spa-Francorchamps
on the other hand you have tracks like the Zeltweg, Silverstone, or Circuit Gilles Villeneuve which are all tiny but insanely fast (lap times between 1 and 2 minutes depending on car)

>There is no meta
lol

lmao even

The old IndyCar in iRacing went the fastest by having its ride height completely backwards to what should work because it only checked for bottoming along the center line of the car so you just got more downforce by the right sidepod going into the ground, something that because of the way other cars are displayed you would never ever figure out without 9000 hours of aimless trial and error or being lucky enough to download a meta setup, and because of the fixed setup series still having the ability to raise and lower the right rear corner still affected all races. This is to say nothing of even funnier exploits like driving in circles before doing a qualifying lap because of some goofy shit where the physics were slightly different depending how many turns in each direction you'd done, driving on the grass to cool tires, having a car in a higher class push you on the straights or give you an otherwise impossible draft, brake dragging at 5mph on outlaps, back when people would take 100 points in off tracks and demote a license during a race to go faster because the game didn't and doesn't police them properly, or the new one this year where people were gridding with rain tires then going to the pit lane to switch to dries because you could set up the car a way that would be illegal if you gridded with dry tires.

Oh yeah and specifically because the MX-5 is an H-pattern car there was an exploit based on an H-pattern controller not being a physical transmission linkage and the way iRacing chose to implement shifting so it basically interprets moving the controller to the next gear as a persistent shift attempt where you would pre-select gears then dip the clutch to shift instantly that I doubt they ever fixed.

The island tours in test drive unlimited 1 + 2 can take an hour. I honestly feel like TDU 1+2 went too far on the size of their game worlds as while the maintain a reasonably realistic scale turns out driving across relatively flat roads for miles upon miles is kinda boring. It is something classic NFS did well with its track design - long enough to feel like it is at a realistic sort of pace (as in you aren't blasting around corners at 180mph like you might in SCUD race) but diverse enough in style and layout to be engaging without fatigue.

still ragequit after diddling the differential and other settings still couldn't give me the proper track time

HP2010 looks nice but holy shit is it a frustrating pain in the ass to play. Every single car understeers to a ridiculous degree and feels like a boat. I'm also not a fan of the progression system where you'll be unlocking cars in tiers one or two below where you are in the career mode so you never really get an opportunity to use them unless you backtrack or free drive. I know it's partially a skill issue, but it's not really enjoyable to have to perfectly drift basically every single corner.

I've been playing old school rally, picked it up in the steam sale. It has a v-rally vibe with some excellent stage designs, but sometimes finicky handling. Some cars seem to drift easily, but ironically cars with higher handling stats tend to turn too sharply and cut the drift short. It's made with a bucketful of love though and has a pumping ost. Still EA atm and could do with some optional online Vs/tourney features to give it some lasting power.

Racing games are fun until you learn how to drive a real (manual^tm) car, and then they become shit because you would rather have a real steering wheel, pedals, and shift box but you don't feel like spending $1k+ on a racing rig, so you never actually ever play those games ever again.

The issue with making another game as good as F-Zero or Wipeout is that its hard as fuck, it cant be too fast or too slow, it cant have wonky physics otherwise you ruin the gameplay severely because these games punish bumps and crashes severely enough as is, and you cant make combat or handling too overpowered or underpowered because then you just end up with bootleg Episode 1 Pod racer, and the game has to have content (an issue plaguing 90% of anti gravity racers)
The only things you need to make a good racing sim nowadays is:
>having good grafix
>having physics that dont feel bizarre
>not fucking up force feedback

This game would have been goated if it had way more free flow drift events like the canyon ones, and more canyon stuff in general, Palmond is kinda boring to race on outside of Darius's territories, specially Kempton thats almost entirely flat and has too many straights because "muh muscle car territory". Having tier 1 and 2s being gatekept from having better performance is also stupid, it makes it so the game forces you to get the first tier 3 you can get your hands on after unlocking Silverton because otherwise the Corvettes and Murcis gap you like nothing else in this world.
>>714016409
Not a sim but Racing Lagoon is real nice if you want to keep the PSX binge going, it lets you drive *anything* using any kind of upgrades, you can make a Camaro with a quad turbo 3 rotor engine, a Mini with a 7L V8 from a Corvette, an Skyline with a souped up inline 3 with like 2 superchargers and 4 turbos, anything you want, the game lets you make it

Racing games were always a comparatively cheap way to showcase graphics, so console publishers pushed for them. When graphics peaked, racing games went away. Notice how Nintendo bowed out of racing games a gen early because Wii was an overclocked Gamecube.
>>714078316
You can do that if you are an indie, you can tenatively do that if you are a big guy but don't have prior material to work with or that material has not-Lambos in the first place (for example Square Enix can probably go remake Racing Lagoon), you can't re-release Most Wanted and say "well Toyota didn't want to renew the license but hey, look at these Toyomatsus, they are totally different!".

Why would I? You're right. Even the mid 2000s had some hip hop and rap music but it was mixed in with plenty of other types of music. People still talk about Most Wanted's music. Nowadays it's bottom of the barrel coon tunes exclusively.

Not even that, it's not all nigger music and there is good nigger music, they just put shit stuff in.
Look at how Sony massacred Wipeout Omega's soundtrack. Sony has a fucking music label, they could assemble the best goddamn soundtrack humans have ever heard, but instead they scraped the bottom and dumped it onto a franchise that's so deeply intertwined with its music that just a few years prior they dragged composers out of retirement for 2048's OST. Preposterous.

Yeah, I can't believe people get filtered by sim racing, even though the whole point of the game is just driving smoothly. Like how pulling down your mouse is praised in FPS games, but smoothly pushing your analog stick left or right and gently releasing it is seen as a bad thing in racing games?

I'm gonna say it

Burnout Revenge is better than Takedown. A common talking point I see people make is that "traffic doesn't matter in Revenge" when this doesn't follow any sound logic beyond the tonal whiplash of Traffic Attack which is the first event you play in the game. In terms of dangerous traffic such as oncoming, and the trucks and buses on the with traffic, the obstacle density is identical to 3. The only thing that changed was the smaller vehicles being far more numerous on the with traffic side to facilitate traffic checking.

Driving wise, it's a Burnout game but with heavier steering, you basically need to yank it into a drift and then once you're snapped into the Burnout rail you can massage the drift angle with ease. If you are reacting late and really need to make the turn, use the handbrake as a panic button.

I just discovered GT4 for the first time and could someone explain how did this blatant skip got into game? From what I heard the third game was pretty brutal when it comes to difficulty. did they decide that fuck it, people are supposed to curate the level of challenge they want?

Like, at this point I might a well use cheats to get infinite money just to save a bit of time because the progression is completely busted.

1 day old thread and I shouldn't be contributing to it at this point. But while I hate modern gaming, I do actually like gran Turismo 7.. I think 3 career mode was better, but 7s is good enough, and they've done a fine job adding more cars and updating the game..lots of tracks, and it feels good to race. Looking forward to gt8 in 2035

True, but if people enjoy playing FPS games using a controller, I don't see that being a big deal. In fact, controllers are still quite good for things like trail braking or rev matching. Of course, people with a wheel have more of an advantage just like those using mouse and keyboard
>they all same tracks
What do you mean? Most of these kinds of games usually have more than 20 tracks, including original tracks

The Black Box NFS games are overrated. Hairpin turns with shit drifting physics, constant "gotcha" traps in the course design a hard requirement to make one of your cars look fucking retarded to advance in the career mode, and a bunch of unlockable cars that aren't even worth using over your starter vehicle.

The atmosphere is really good the game feels more glamorous and alive, and it provides tuning options so you can design your cars to match your play style.
The downside is that all that tuning doesnโ€™t really matter, since you can wall ride just fine

It's shit taste. In a sea of post Fast and the Furious street racing games the most established series somehow had some of the worst. The actual licensed Fast and the Furious game was better than that trash.

>>714099014
Couple that with the fact most obstacles in the game completely kill your moment if you just graze them at the wrong angle. Like literally dead stop sometimes. You don't even bounce off guard rails half the time.

First person cockpit view in a 3d full textured racing game on GBA. Real 3d not those locked camera with pre-loaded background. You can turn around and race in reverse. And it has a lot of variety with tracks.
It's not getting enough praises. And it was made by two french.

As for me I've basically given up on arcadey racers and switched over to playing ACC when I want to sim it up and RVGL when I want arcadey combat racing.

WRC Rally Evolved. The random hazards appearing on track (opponent's car breaking down, random cars parked on the road, rock slide, animals cross the road, and that small chance for the first Australian rally stage to have a wildfire causing the other 2 stages to be burned and ashy) made the game amazing.
