I started playing this today, idk how I feel about it. They frontloaded a lot of movement and combat skills before you even began playing properly.
Imagine if in any other metroidvania you began with a parry, counter, dash, wall climb and hookshot. It would just confuse the player, since they didn't get used to the gameplay yet.
And the story overstays its welcome, there's too much talking and walking and being edgy, look at le gore!!
I hope it gets better later, there's some potential here but not feeling it yet.

Thats like the complete opposite of what i think about Hollow Knight, the movement is super slow and snail paced at the beginning.

Isn't the point of metroidvanias to unlock new ways to move and interact with the world? If you have all abilites from the start, isn't that just an action platformer, like Megaman?

Nine Sols is the only "metroidvania" I've played and I got used to the mechanics pretty easily. The game gives you tons of room to practice.

The problem is unlockable abilities in lets say SoTN feel like a progressive extension of the moveset- Double Jump? Check, now i can turn into a Bat and fly, now turn into Mist and phase through stuff- underwater diving.
In Hollow Knight at the beggining you can... move left and right... Jump and... Thats it, wall jump and air dash should have been part of the base moveset why restrict the player so much when theres still a lot of spells to collect and shit like the shade cloak that completely breaks the game.

Why? You're in a platformer mindset instead of a exploration game mindset. In games about exploration, you need locks and keys, even if they aren't literal locks or keys. A movement ability is a key. If you begin the game with an air dash it means it can't be a key, everything in the game has to be made by considering that as the base moveset. If you don't have many movement unlockables, your world will only be limited by special attacks meant to open specific paths, and that's boring gameplay, like hollow knight's stomp.

Funny, one of the things I was gonna say is that you don't begin with the grappling hook in super metroid. You just run, jump and shoot, not even morphball.

My point is that there are probably no new movement upgrades on Nine Sols since they frontload it all. You'd just get something like a double jump, allow you to dash in the air and a better grapple, then you'd get key items or color coded attacks to unlock doors, and nothing new in terms of movement. It would be pretty boring if it was just that.

Nine Sols really pisses me off. Not because it's bad, but because it's a genuine example of artificial difficulty. I repeatedly died on the boat ride to the harpy boss. Not because I was bad at the game (maybe I am, but that's not relevant here), not because I'm bad at the genre (I've finished Hall of Gods in Hollow Knight),not because the enemies were difficult. Most of my deaths were already due visual clutter surrounding overlapping attacks, but on that boat ride I died twice to attacks concealed by the foreground objects. Are you fucking kidding me? Any game which has debris in the foreground blocking your view of enemies is worthy of disdain. I passed that section and beat the boss afterwards, but the monumentally awful level design ruined the game for me and I have not been able to bring myself to launch it since. If the leadup to a boss is so awful that you no longer feel like playing the game after beating that boss you've really nailed the concept of horrible level design. It's one thing for players to quit due to losing to a boss, but making players quit after beating a boss as they think "fucking hell this was already so awful I can't be fucked seeing what comes next" is an achievement.

glorified rhythm games go into the trash. sekiro has been an absolute cancer for the indie scene. this game is more action game than metroidvania, it has very little compelling metroidvania qualities (shit world, shit movement progression, shit backtracking).

The game IS an action/platformer/story game. All the metroivdania elements are blatant window dressing that only exist in the game because that's what's popular these days - "metroidvania progression" for 2D, "open world" for 3D. The creator either added them in for the sake of following a formula or just didn't think too deeply about them, but they're not that relevant to the main aspects of the game that the appeal revolves around.

nine sols isnt that much about exploration in that sense, its more about a linear action game
nothing bad about HK's stomp, and the cool thing about it is that nearly everything important can be accessed by something else, another key in another direction, which gives it great route variety (other than pre claws where the game is relatively linear)
