I haven't bought anything more than $10 over the past 10 years and I've never once run out of great games to play. I haven't even spent $5 total this year and I've clocked over 400 hours across multiple great games. Just wait for sales and grab freebies when you can. It's really not an issue when you only buy like 1 - 3 new games through the year.
For the most part, you can get by decently well by grabbing stuff during sales. And that's ignoring emulation and piracy.
