People are asking for EU regulation to stop companies from completely shutting down old games.
For example, an always-online singleplayer game should have the online DRM removed when the online service is shut down. A multiplayer game should have some other way to let people keep playing, like letting the players host their own servers. That kind of stuff.
Anonymous No.713973782 [Report]
>>713973064
A developer releases a single-player game, that requires server authentication from the developer or publishers servers. IIRC this is supposed to force developers to remove that server authentication if they ever decide to remove the servers, stop updating the game.

Stop Killing Games will force scummy studios like IO to actually make their Hitman game fully functional offline, instead of locking off 90% of the content behind an online connection.

The argument can go both ways.

>game released before bill
>game shut down before bill
Law doesn't apply.

Just make normal single player games so and stop making shitty online games. I havent played an online games in like a decade. They are a total waste of time to engage with compared to just playing single player games that have a beginning, middle and end.

He hits the nail on the head at 10:30, this was a non-issue in the past and it's not even an universal issue right now either. If middleware is the issue then middleware providers should update their licenses or be outcompeted by other middleware providers with sensible licenses.

>the EU has never made a retroactive law,
Wrong. Member-state law implementations of EU Directive 2019/771 directive on sale of digital content explicitly are to apply retroactively for content that was still in active supply by the date of Jan 1st 2022 when the legislation was to enter into force - i.e. for anything you bought in the past and can be installed on demand from an online account's library.

The Directive contains a term in its formative legal text stating this, and excluding precisely those very few terms of the Directive that were not required to apply retro-actively.

It won't even have to. The ball is already rolling and the EU is already acting towards this, with several events happening over the past year. (Parliamentary questions to the legality of publishers 'plug-pulling' games; guidance documents on the legality of certain terms of contract; etc.)

The ECI meeting the 1mil bar would just accelerate the train, but the train already HAS left the station. And it is NOT stopping.
