Are heavy attacks even viabvle in melee combat or are they only for opening fights and stealth attacks?

I want to play the furry race but I am intimidated by the alcoholism mechanic it comes with and turning off race effects is unimmersive and for gooner cucks.

Grab torches and use them for blocking. They level your shield skill up to 40 afaik.
You can also use the cursed shields enemies drop since they will break sooner or later anyways when you block a lot.

Do you have any tips on when and how to avoid attacks? I noticed that moving sideways and backwards is a lot slower than morving forward, which makes avoiding attacks very difficult.

You mean hitting the enemy once with a charge attack, retreating and then repeating until he dies?
Sounds very difficult but could be worth trying.
