Because 8 used its pretty graphics as a gimmick. World uses the power of the system it's on to render a huge open world, so the graphics are more stylized than detailed. 8 also has the advantage of each track being self contained so it can devote more power to rendering just the stuff on the course itself.

In MKW you can be in 20th place on the last lap and still come 1st. So much more balanced and satisfying to play.
