although it's odd we americans don't see a whole lot of Lord of the Flies or Great Gatsby in our media. Maybe it's because we don't read about cute little girls in our education cirriculum. I did read Jane Eyre in high school, so I think more 16 year old maids falling in love with their 40 year old mansion proprietor would be nice

first one is very fun but the jump was kind of janky and the jabberwhatever was genuinely infuriating as a boss fight
second has a better art direction but it super repetitive super fast and makes replays unbearable

This guy’s parents are such an evil piece of shit. For starter’s his mother named him ‘American McGee’, then his father abandoned him and only came back to beat him while drunk on his 13th birthday. Then she sold their house and spent all of their savings on the transgender ‘surgery’ (mutilation) of some tranny she was dating, she also abandoned him when he was just 16 years old and moved away with that same tranny, the guy was homeless as a teenager. And despite all that he still became a successful videogame developer.

it's early 2000s jank but good early 2000s jank
environments were really cool, slow start, but the pale realm was where i was like "yep this game is kino"
the weapon variety is neat, in practice there's only a few weapons that are actually good, but it's nice to have silly options like the demon dice and bombs, most of them having an alt fire is also great
it is an f5/f9 game, or at least, it was for child me, particularly in the magma level where the lava kills you near instantly
the pacing was good and story was enj0yable, it's a good game

alice 2 was a slog
there's only four weapons, none of which is very interesting, and they don't have alt fires or alternative functionality
like i guess there's the umbrella and timed bombs too but it just didnt interest me
also there's a "hysteria mode" that was hyped up before release, but it's terribly implemented
also not crazy about the enemies, especially most of them just being black sludge and doll parts

levels last way too long and get repetitive, i also kinda didn't like them? the asian one was the only one i found pretty and interesting, the rest are just kinda aesthetically shallow and again, I was sick of the dollhouse aesthetic 5 minutes in, and that was the longest level of all of them

london segments are nice but get shorter and less detailed as the game goes on. they do at least get pleasantly surreal in the latter parts

the story sucks, i couldnt give a fuck about this doctor dude

legitimately the worst thing about the game

tl dr first game is interesting and enjoyable, second one disappointing and mostly fails at what it tries to do. i'd been super hyped for it but it just wasnt fun

And you know what? I am actually glad that Asylum got cancelled. Why? Because I've been following McGee's brainstorming about it and literally the first things he set in stone were some of the slop that made his 2nd game a chore to compelte. AMA is one of my favorite games. The recent VorpalFix mod for the remastered version makes it superior to the original release. I've played the game so many times and listen to the OST quite a bit. Pool of Tears best song.

I haven't played AMR, it doesn't look like a terrible game but there are a lot of things I already find a bit offputting about it. I don't really feel like playing it would add to how much I enjoyed the first game.

Yeah, he has good ideas for things sometimes, but I'm not sure if he really has any great ideas for Alice anymore. Each time it feels like he's just retelling the first story with some kind of new twist but that gets old. I think he had a better idea for a movie or something where she was going to be in other people's wonderlands helping them. But he just keeps her as an eternal victim.

I wonder how much of AMA's success was due to Rogue Entertainment. I know it's common to give all the credit to the most public developer but they clearly had a part in things too.

Sucks, but that's just how publishers (EA especially) are nowadays.
The collectibles would be much better if they were all tracked, I went back to 100% MR and some were bastards to collect because I wasn't sure where they would be. If they were easily tracked, which I'm sure they would be nowadays, it wouldn't be so bad.
