I used to think fire starters were the obvious choice since regular fire pokemon are so much less common than water and grass (just look at Sinnoh) but now I realize fire is probably one of the least useful types outside of competitive.
When you pick a fire starter you end up having to build too much of your team around it to make sure it doesn't get overshadowed by the plethora of fighting and ground types.

I don't know how it is with other emulators, but the one I use (VBA-M-WX), you can open multiple instances at the same time and even trade between them. There's nothing in the game code to prevent two trainers with the same ID from trading, and the pokemon acts like you caught it normally, since the trainer IDs match.
