Psychonauts 1 is certified hood classic. Psychonauts 2 had some problems but refined a lot of the core gamplay features and was an overall solid sequel.

Do you think we'll see more from this franchise? If not another mainline game, maybe a spinoff? A comic? An animated show?

Get with the games, old man. Bluesky is the new Lefty site. All the lefties got chased off because Musk let everyone call them retards and faggots without getting banned.

There's plenty of space for another sequel. Portray a grown-up Raz who now has a mastery over water powers to introduce a new dimension to the gameplay. Just make a game about adult Raz and Lili, the concept is literally bulletproof unless they try to sabotage it consciously (which they did not with 2).

as much as i liked 2 i never got over how I felt the villian was handled. like in the first game Oliander is a misunderstood sort of person who kidnapped children and had their brain sucked out but he gets to get redeemed cause he has daddy issues, but this other guy, who i don't remember his name, is somehow a very likeable dude in in the agency dispite him not having psychic powers, but is a prick bent at destroying them. wouldn't military trained mind readers have caught on to him at some point? and even barring that, the guy experience his whole fucking homeland get swept away due to your fucking grandma and instead of him having a vendetta towards psychics for her actions, he worships her? and he's still the ultimate bad guy while your grandma gets a pass due to what she did being some hokey shit about unga bunga emotions or some shit i don't remember either. but I got completely rubbed the wrong way about how this game ultimately concluded due who how i perceive a rewrite on the non-psychic guy. I felt he could have a redemption, his reasons has cause, his life was altered due to the powers he couldn't comprehend, but lol he was a spoiled child and a dick, who somehow people loved him in the agency. yeah very good heartwarming story, Schaffer.

I would have loved a cartoon or animated shorts. Something to expand on the world and characters.

all I want to know is if psychonauts 2 has more thirsty lily scenes
My intuition tells me it probably does not because the devs lost their souls

The #1 reason this game fails is the same reason they decided it would be a good idea to consult actual psych ward orderlies to inform their game’s portrayal of mental health. Psychonauts 1 would not have been a good game if it didn’t take such a punk attitude to neuroscience and intentionally chosen not to namedrop DSM labels when portraying its characters. I feel like the only way Psychonauts can truly realize its full potential now is if Tim goes rogue and makes a game about Raz becoming a villain and attempting to tear the organization down to flush out that corruption.

I'm still not sure if 2 was intentionally portraying the Psychonauts as insular morons who would rather pick their noses with telekinesis than actually do anything of impact. They get tricked by a dude with no powers despite being mind-readers because he's actually trained as a diplomat and so knows how to mislead people. They descend into petty squabbling the second emotions get complicated despite being an organization of people specialized in navigating mental spaces.

Like, it'd be cool to see a third game but they had no idea why they were making a second one other than 'people liked the first one'. I get there was a decade+ of dev hell but jesus christ. It's really not clear where you'd go from here.

I feel like it was completely intentional, given almost the same thing happens in 1.

Yeah but in 1 you spend most of the time interacting with people harmed by that incompetence or who genuinely need that style of assistance in the asylum. 2 it's all people who are enmeshed with the problems and so you're fighting against decades-old demons in a bunch of old fogeys who should really be sorting this out themselves.

Psychics don't have some sort of sense where they know someone is up to no good, but even still how they can read people's mind is a bit all over the place. Generally speaking it seems that they can read your inner monolog, but unless your inner monolog is talking about killing someone they won't know what your true intentions are unless they do a deep dive in to your mind.

> but this other guy, who i don't remember his name, is somehow a very likeable dude in in the agency.
His name was Nick. He wasn't likeable in the normal sense, but more so that he is such an unassuming grunt that people only ever had small talk with that they liked him. Just like how you generally like your own mail man you don't know their personal life or anything about them really.

>but is a prick bent at destroying them.
He just wants to destroy the Psychonauts organization, not psychics in general. He hates the Psychonauts because to him his life and country where perfect and anyone who said otherwise is evil. Maligula didn't see that her making it rain on the protesters would kill them, which in turn caused her both to snap and become a completely different person and the death of the protesters caused an all out revolution. The thing is, Nick was young and completely consumed by his aristocratic life, so to him all the people who took that from him are pure evil. He sees Maligula as a god because not only was she super powerful but also was trying to fix the country while the protesters refused to accept the changes that where happening. Even after you enter his mind and show him how his family and country was shit he refused to believe it and even doesn't care, so long as he gets his way.

Also a reminder that release Psychonauts 2’s plot is completely different from the intended original and that the double agent plot was originally going to involve someone resurrecting Maligula with necromancy. There are entire cut maps. It’s really sad.

It was made by an Indian guy and originally had a Japanese aesthetic. No idea if that changes anything.
Anonymous No.714008624 [Report]
Psychonauts 2 somehow felt overstuffed and underdeveloped at the same time. It wasn't bad, but it had problems. My biggest gripe is the level design. It wasn't varied enough. Also they really should have put a bullet in Maligula's head (along with like half the original 6, honestly) but that wouldn't really fit the tone so I get why they didn't.

The head of Doublefine (and probably most of their staff) definitely is.

Didn't really notice anything in the game itself that reflected that. Outside of a few tropes that have been in pop-culture since the 90s.

Imagine if this were a mainstream child's cartoon. It would be a huge hit. Instead it's a niche game almost no one who didn't play the first one knows about. Anyway, I enjoyed both games, but the first is obviously peak, second was an okay sequel.

Like others said Psychonauts, gameplay wise, is an average platformer of its era.
However, it uses its style choices and theming to an excellent degree to make very amusing levels, and tell reasonably good stories within them.
The levels themselves vary pretty wildly in quality, but the ones that are good are very good.

the thing about Oliander is he wasn't even evil until the massive psychic rock started bringing out his biggest insecurities. He did his best to keep them bottled up, but he never ended up getting the help he needed to deal with them (which is ironic because he's part of an organization that does just that).

That being said the way they treated him in the sequel was pretty shitty? They acted like he was 100% in control of his actions when the game makes it very clear he wasn't.

I'll grant you that.
But, like I said, the normalization of that existed in the 90s. Wasn't until the late 00s/early 10s that the rainbow mafia went full mask off.
Or, at least when they started publishing video footage of dragging their bedroom out onto mainstreet.

Psychonauts 2 was written by the same minds for the most part that is evident but as is the fact that they're all 20 years older and all choose to work in lock step with the post sock puppet Tim Schafer.
1 had whimsey and 2 was a sequel where the real world attitudes shone through more.
