Logically, DQXI is 5 years, but it's more like 8 years since the last single player DQ title, 9. Really though, it's more like 13 years since 8 was the last DQ title to be a normal JRPG.

When there isn't a single problem for DQ from 7 onwards.
All the games are more successful than the last.
They supplement breaks with spinoffs and remakes. After 7 there had been new DQM titles, expansion on Mystery Dungeon, the DQ1-3 remakes on GBC, the DQ4 remake on PSX.
After Dragon Quest 8 there was more DQM, Rocket Slime, the 4-6 remakes on DS, the new Monsters Joker series, Swords, and the DQ5 remake on PS2.
After DQ9 there was DLC for it and DQX was an incredibly close followup project.
DQX itself is STILL being supported, and after that the entire series from 1-8 got ported to mobile, 7 got a 3DS remake, 8 got a 3DS port, DQM1 and 2 got remade for 3DS, the Heroes series started and ended, and Dragon Quest Builders released.

And now, in the wake of Dragon Quest XI we have had
