I picked up Xenoblade Chronicles 1 last night and noticed 2 is also on sale. How often do the Xenoblade Chronicles' games actually go on sale?

They were all free last time I emulated them.

So as expected XC2 is a better experience on the second pass. And not just because I can get to the good parts of the battle system or because Rex's movement is significantly faster. When Rex meets Pyra, even though Pyra is very pleasant in tone, there's no smile. She's not happy, in fact she's just shy of miserable. Considering the reason why she exists, I understand.

Malos also loses his shit when he realizes that Rex has made himself her Driver. And if that isn't evidence enough of his salty he still is after 500 years, he directly references their fight but Malos remarks that the Aegis looks different. He really should be thankful. Malos isn't running at 100% because of his broken Core Crystal but Mythra isn't either because of her own PTSD and defaulting to Pyra to act in her place.

And Mythra's power level was going up way faster than anyone could do anything with, Addam included. The second Malos opened fire on the Capitol, it was already over. Addam couldn't even hold Pneuma's Silver Sword without being hurt by it, he was put in the same position as Dunban when the Monado began to burn his arm as it enslaved his body. Could you imagine if Mythra's chains were entirely loosed and Pneuma were allowed to attack unrestricted? She would've atomized everything in her path, nothing would survive. Spooky Alpha territory was going to happen no matter what. Mythra learning empathy is the reason why she was able to hold back and operate under the belief that her friends could make up the difference. But when Malos fired on the capital, that empathy turned off like a switch. Even as she's pleading in her head that she wants to save everyone and that she's not like Malos she did exactly what you're praising her for. Except even then "getting her shit together" is wrong, in that moment she became a weapon. An indiscriminate bomb that would kill everything in her way so long as Malos was one of them. The only difference between a Mythra with Addam and a Mythra without him is that a Mythra without wouldn't have cared about Torna's fall. She would've took the edgy utilitarian stance that she traded a few thousand lives in exchange for the rest of the world and those shithead survivors better stop crying before she tells Siren to hit the mute button. But even as Addam was frightened by her, she was still able to learn enough empathy in their travels to understand the horror of what she just did. From Addams perspectives, he just watched to god tier Blades duke it out in the skies. Even after incorporating the lessons he got from Lorna and Jin about cooperation between Blade and Driver, he could not control her. He couldn't even touch her weapon. If he wasn't afraid of her after that then everyone else should be afraid of him.

At this point, I'm waiting on ANY Xenoblade news.

It really is a special game. Pyra comes across as just a standard nice, kind girl throughout the game, as a contrast to Mythra who's abrasive and arrogant and we have a bit of an inkling why. It's not until the end where you finally understand them and understand just how deep that pain runs.

There's so many amazing touches in 2's story that show just how much depth there is if you dig in even a little bit. Like right off the top of my head-

I don't like Torna because I feel a lot of the retcons make it a far weaker and far smaller story. In the base game you're told about the Aegis war as being this huge ongoing clash between their armies. You have places like Aeigshammer that show the devastation Malos and Mythra's clashes wrought.

Malos was so dangerous they had to fight him at full strength, and fighting at full strength meant the very land beneath their feet was destoyed. It's a terrible, horrible choice but Addam and Mythra did what needed to be done, saved as many as they could and sacrificed as little as possible.

And then Torna comes along and just says "Nah they only met once at the end." And all the sacrifices and the hard decisions seem to just... I don't even know.

But if we wanna talk about hating someone because of Torna, let's talk about Jin. Because holy FUCK. Not only does his backstory with Lora turn him into a creepy groomer (he literally raised her as his waifu...) but seeing her and everything they did together throughout Torna means everything he was doing in the base game was outright spitting on everything she stood for, everything she wanted and believed in.

His big moment in 2 is his final goodbye with Malos where they part as friends... but that's crazy, holy fuck. Lora would be spinning in her grave at light speed if she saw the insane shit that Jin was doing in her name, and doing alongside Malos.

Mythra and Malos still fought fought over multiple battles, they just fought through their Artifices and didn't meet face-to-face until Torna. Milton mentions Mythra has been traveling with them for a year, so the Aegis War lasted that whole year, with battles like the Aeigshammer happening during it and capping off with the fight at Torna. The DLC just doesn't show those fights because it's beyond the scope of a smaller expansion and the importance is focusing on the characters rather than showing all the big historical events.

I'm not a fan of 1's battle system myself.

2 rewards you for playing well, the better you play the faster your arts cool down, the faster your arts cool down the more combos do, the more combos you do the more chains you do, the more chains you do the more breaks you can do, etcetc it all builds on itself. The entire system becomes a wonderful virtuous cycle, the better you play the more you're rewarded.

Meanwhile in 1, not only are you scrolling through a menu instead of using binds, your abilities are just on cooldowns. And the TP Gauge not resetting with each battle means you have to babysit it, which means you don't use it as much as you should. It's annoying.

in 2, Chain Attacks were based off putting up the right combos/orbs and then breaking them. It got easier as you went through, but it was mostly fine off the bat.

In 1 it's all RNG whether attacks follow up. It'll get better, but early on it's not even worth using Chain Attack because it's just RNG whether anything even happens. Wait till the midpoint in the game or later.

We're told by Azurda that all Jins get too attached to their drivers, this one just managed to discover the FE process, and have a moment of despair bad enough to actually attempt it. At least once Rex is actually able to tell him to knock his bullshit off, he almost immediately begins making amends even if it's far too late to do so effectively. I'd love a more in-depth explanation of his thing with Malos as he got the guy to chill out massively in the span since Torna, even if he still massively tilts over Mythra besting him. At the very end he even acknowledges he has no place in the world and needs to be stopped and tells Rex he better bring his fucking A game to do so. The cheeky dickhead of Torna's time would never do that shit in a million years.
