Hiroshi Yamauchi officiailly left Nintendo after 55 years. He was president from 1949-2002 and stayed as Board of directors for an additional 3 years, mainly to oversee the development of the DS and Wii systems and assisting his successor Satoru Iwata.

Yamauchi is widely considered the best Nintendo president of all time due to turning his great-grandfather's small card company into a video game empire, as well as greenlighting the best Nintendo games under his tenure (he saved HAL Laboratory from going bankrupt in 1993 and turned them into a second-party studio). When Yamauchi left, there was a signifncant decline in quality in terms.

Reminder that Iwata killed the power Nintendo of America had in the 90s

From 1990-2000. Nintendo of America had production and management autonomy from Japan. NOA basically culminated its own production team, along a few co-designers, and started funding and producing games with developers.

>DMA Design: Uni Racers, Body Harvest (Nintendo dropped it in 1997, Midway took it)
>Angel Studios: Ken Griffey Baseball, Buggie Boogie (canceled)
>Bits Studios: Warlocked, Riqa (canceled)
>Rare: Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct, Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark
>Software Creations: Ken Griffey Baseball, Tin Star
>Silicon Knights: Eternal Darkness (N64 version)
>Left Field Productions: Kobey Bryant in NBA Courtside, Excitebike 64
>Looking Glass Studio: Mini Racers (canceled)
>Mass Media: Star Craft 64
>H20: Tetrisphere
>Saffire Corp: Nester's Funky Bowling, James Bond 007
>Midway: Cruisn Series

Nintendo of America also procured the Ken Griffey and MLBPA license, NHL License, Kobe Bryant and NBA license, PGA license, Disney license, James Bond license, StarCraft license. Star Wars Episode I license. They were producing their own first-party games separate from Nintendo of Japan.

That all changed when Iwata transitioned from Global Marketing Chief to President. NOA Production was killed, and Nintendo of Japan's SPD Department took over all Western development (Star Fox Adventures, Geist, Eternal Darkness GC).

Henry Sterchi, Brian Ullrich, Ken Lobb, Ed Ridgeway, Jeff Hutt, Faran Thomason, and the whole crew left NOA to Microsoft and other developers. Since then, we've seen the Western model we have today. Western developers reporting directly to Japanese management, and pretty much making B/C sequels to Nintendo IPs.

I feel like the gamecube gen was the last great one, and yamahchi's contributions certainly helped.
Iwata had a vision for what games could be, but without a proper replacement appointed, nintendo went full-blown-aids-corpo, and it certainly shows.
Presumably millions of well trained and conditioned consoomers are under the impression that the S2 is the greatest console yet. This timeline is so unbelievably fucked
>>714027274
Judging by the whiplash in direction change from gc to wii, it was a make or break moment:
Sony and Microsoft were going for raw power and making gaming more accessible to normies by being a multimedia box
Nintendo broke away from caring about graphics, in exchange for gimmicks that appealed to the lowest common denominator casuals, that didn't care about tight gameplay, they just wanted to get caught up in the gimmicky hype
Either way, that gen changed the future of gaming, which I'd argue for the worse.

Switch did nothing but bring more gimmicks, tried less, and joined Sony and Microsoft in milking everyone out of blanket subscriptions. This is the darkest age in gaming, but most will disagree because the games are just so gosh darn pretty, and heckin immersive.

True, and I don't care about online play in general. But it was a deliberate decision to get those uninterested in online play, by holding save data recovery hostage, and getting rid of the virtual console to dupe fans of older games into dropping money on the regular instead of one time a la carte
inb4
>Hurr, makes gud business sense durr
Not the point. It's exploitive, and so disheartening that people lack the integrity to collectively see that and call Nintendo out for it. Instead, it sold like wildfire because
>muh new mario and open world zelda
And for most intents and purposes replaced the Wii U AND 3DS, so consumers didn't really have a choice but to come together

The only mistake he made was letting Rare get brought out by Microsoft. He should have brought the rest of the company and maybe the Gamecube would have some more killer apps and especially Donkey Kong would have had avoided that still-ongoing rut it's been in for as long as Yamauchi's been away from the company.

Wario Land was replaced by the return of 2D Mario
Yoshi was never good, besides Yoshi's Island which was actually a 2D Mario game that just gets retroactively counted as a Yoshi game
>Mario, Zelda, DK
You are nostalgia blinded or otherwise coping
F-Zero was lost in the shuffle as development scale expanded and Nintendo could only continuously keep a few series going themselves, plus some cheap outsourced shovelware series like Mario Tennis or Mario & Luigi. It also did not match the return of blue ocean strategy in the Iwata era.

Agreed.
But it's not even the AAA industry, it's the architecture of the consoles themselves. Game ownership went dodo, and systems are just a money pit that millions have been brainwashed into thinking it's all worth it. Shit sucks
But to your point, that does open the door to those who seek real gaming to the world of secondhand and pirate gaming
