the issue was that in 2011 most popular games were very on the rails and starting to get easier and easier. Uncharted, god of war, bioshock, mafia 2, batman games, etc. all those games practically played themselves.
then comes dark souls, creates a new control layout (no game had r1 hits, l1 blocks not one), has no quests or questlog. i also think the series only went really mainstream with ds3, ds1 was still a "niche" game at release for sure. The vaati lore videos made it 100x more popular but those came years after release.

Most games back then were incredibly dumbed down. Devs saw the Wii was successful and decided that they wanted their games to appeal to people who'd never touched a controller before. Dark Souls actually punishing you for doing something stupid was strange and unexpected.

I remember playing it for the first time 2013 on my PS3 and i got stuck after the first encounter with Seath the Scaleless, then got back into it after watching someone speedrunning it and showing that the game is actually quite easy if you understand how it's supposed to be played.
I remember spending so much time killing these weak-ass enemies cause i've only played shit like God of War or Devil May Cry, but turns out it's better to just ignore them and go to a boss fight with all your Estus Flasks etc. At one point i was able to beat Dark Souls in about 2 hours and change, i would play it just to distract myself. 2013 ~ 2015 were good times for me, still in high school and only cared about drinking and playing vydia.

After recently playing Jedi Survivor. I understand Dark Souls even more than I used to. Despite the fact that the game can be broken by its stupid RPG mechanics. It is a genuine miracle that froms 2nd try at their combat was so genuinely balanced and well thought out as it is. I plan on doing a big indepth thread on Jedi Survivor and the problems with combat design. Will do some Dark Souls glazing while im at it, to prove that coherence is more important than challenge. Mechanics actually all working together matters more than a game with superfluous mechanics that exist just to be used. Not to enhance or bolster other aspects of play.
