Infinite is proof of that and BaS Ep2 is proof that in the end he really doesn't care about making a good game, he cares about making a game that makes HIM important. bioshock 1 atleast had some decent subtext, frankly I think it's a little overrated, but there was atleast something there.

my issue with infinite is that it wants to be deeper than what it actually is. Nothing in its story has any coherence, for example what is the significance of having booker Dewitt's alternate self become a religious zealot? The story touches on certain topics and brings them into play but doesn't really do anything with them, or have anything interesting to say. All that being rounded out in an ending that suddenly brings the branching universes to the forefront and isn't really conclusive of the other themes brought up in the game. Lot of loose ideas that seem like they want to evoke something, but don't.

It tries to pretend to be smart by talking about stuff like racism, classism, multiverse theory and "constants and variables" despite the fact that NONE of it matters since when you have an infinite ammount of universes, no choice truly matters, even with elizabeth's power filter.

If you die ingame, Booker "respawns" from another universe, why isn't HIS nose bleeding because of that? inb4 "it does bleed when he thinks about his own universe" yeah but when you die, it's not really booker's original universe. Do the Lutece just simply keep drawing from an infinite pool of bookers that also sold their daughters to Comstock? Who also happened to still be Booker btw. At that point you're not really rescuing his Elizabeth.

Then there's the massive gaping retcon that BaS2 did, not only to the main franchise, that's another (massive) issue, but mostly to it's own main game, by having Fitzroy be coerced into being a martyr so Elizabeth can become serious and wear the hot dress and the hairstyle from the beta/trailers. It literally invalidates most of the anthetesis of the Vox Rebellion, by throwing away the "Children of the rich are also at fault, so I'm gonna kill them and wipe the slate clean" to "haha, I never actually MEANT to harm the kid, I just needed to die so she could become... dr manhattan or something". Hell, they even hint that the whole Vox Rebellion was orchestrated by the Lutece. This is just bad writing.


oh and the gameplay sucks balls, if you thought Bioshock 1 was already a consolized imsim, then Infinite is just CoD with eyecandy.

I remember that time.
The latched on to Heavy Rain, then Infinite before finally setting on The Last of Us.
It's kinda surreal to look back now and realize how desperate for acceptance video games were, or rather how desperate journos were that vidya be accepted as art so they could pretend their jobs weren't jokes.
Also hilarious how terribly aged those games are now. Heavy Rain and David Cage in general are a joke that nobody takes remotely seriously and the only thing people still remember Infinite by is all the Elizabeth SFM porn.

Heavy Rain has its charm in a campy Euro-thriller kind of way. Cage games are incredibly earnest to fault, which is something I can respect them for.

The bigger mystery is why it took so long for them to consider that the artistry in games comes from systematic design. Hell, you could also tell that they believed that a good movie was defined by plot, which if you know anything about cinema, you’ll know isn’t necessarily true. Citizen Kane was considered revolutionary because of its cinematography, afterall.

Because it wasn't a good game, and Bioshock as a franchise was always a creative dead end. The second game had already run out of ideas for its setting, and then the third pretty much just aped the first with some hackneyed and largely irrelevant multiverse bullshit thrown in, because that crap was popular at the time.

Turns out the things Ken Levine had to say as a writer only amounted for a single game, and two pale sequels that retrod the same ground.

Bioshock Infinite is hot garbage, and it's Ken Levine's fault that the franchise died.

I don't think it sold as well as people think it did, I also think BioShock Infinite came out during the initial era of journo and corpo gaslighting to make games look more successful than they actually were.
