Unless the character is a petty dickhead who's been crippled and refuses to use a billion different options available to him in order to make a point until he gets back at those responsible, this is indeed retarded.

If he was at least in a normal wheelchair, it could be justified as the simplest solution without needing to overcomplicate things but the floating purple transparent wheelchair just looks ridiculous.
