What was the last game to actually surpass your expectations?
Pic related for me.

If we're talking new games it's this also. An indie game that wasn't complete shit was mindblowing.

Riven.
If you meant last game played. Wasn't super impressed but Riven is amazing, incredible atmosphere and fun puzzles and navigation. You can tell the devs loved roller coasters. Such a breath of fresh air after what a headache postgame Blue Prince was.

Recent as in most recently played, I don't know. Spirit Hunter Death Mark 2 I guess.

Dungeons of Hinterberg. I was not THAT great, but I was expecting just generic, poorly developed zelda clone and it turned out to be a surprisingly competent zelda clone with a competent combat system.

I'm sort of interested in the premise but it is an unfathomably ugly game.
And I don't mean the character designs, I just mean the everything.

what's funny is Riven was likely the nicest overall "walkabout puzzle game" the entire genre peaked almost 30 fucking years ago.

The Hundred Line. First VN I've put 180+ hours into ... and there's still more left to do.
And Clair Obscur, I guess

I didn't think I'd like Bayonetta.

It's really good.

I tried this and once you get past the great music and aesthetics, it's just kinda boring. There was no incentive to learn different arangements when tagging, you could just mash and it didn't matter. Skating feels just okay, not having a regular boost without having to collect a bunch of spray paint cans wasn't very fun. I wasn't a huge jet set radio fan, but the controls in that game needing more precision actually made it more fun and feel more rewarding when you did stuff.

Eh, it was fine for me since 70% of the time you are just doing dungeons anyways. Also it's a government sponsored game, so they have to play it safe.
