You'll always see an initial spike in interest as players see what's new, but what's more interesting is the tail end of each little curve. Version 1.0 wasn't holding steady by the end of the season, while 1.5 and 2.0 had both leveled off and become stable rather than consistently losing players. The player loss is also less and less steep season-to-season.
Until 2.5. A minor increase in interest followed by an uncharacteristically steep decline that hasn't leveled off.
They had two seasons that had a state of balance capable of maintaining a player base and each time they switched it up more of those players abandoned ship. The latest big balance update was clearly received poorly and may have doomed the game in the short term.
If the next update isn't massively popular that will probably be a wrap on Rivals as one of the bigger multiplayer games.
