Yup, it really did a great job at being a thing.

Objectively speaking, why wouldn't 2013 one not work in a ps3/x360?
Obviously besides the fact that fromshit can't optimize even if their lives depended on it.
But you could remove some things and leave the ground texture and trees with a bit less foliage and that is on par with a lot of games from that era.

I like how the first one is still used as the warp icon.

We don't know much about the game's actual hands-on development, especially for the second dev cycle where Tanimura was swapped in.

I guess it was some technical feature they removed and it led to rebuilding stages

Memory limitations on PS3/360 were harsh and the engine probably wasn't good enough at streaming. The world map of DS2 doesn't make sense and that's probably due to them stapling around the levels to get it running on PS3.

PS3 only had about 200ish MB's of memory.

They ran headfirst into the usual issue that causes downgrades in general. Building sections of the game that work, but then the whole thing falls apart when you stitch it together.

>tfw ps3 network test iso via rpcs3 is the best version of ds2
Has all the original lighting and everything....sad..

Exactly. It's the classic "vertical slice vs full game" trap. You can polish the hell out of one area and make it sing, but once you try to replicate that level of detail across an entire interconnected world, performance, memory, and time all hit you like a brick. DS2 in particular feels like they designed the game in silos and then frantically taped it all together near the end. Still love it, but you can see the stitches.

helly yeah it did
it's a blueprint on how to fuck up, do a 180 and you get a good game

it can carry all the blame of everyone making shitty Souls clones.

Reminder to blame the PS3 and Xbox 360 for this downgrade.

DS2 is literally two games, with the second one being partially made out of the assets of the first one. If you ever wondered why Iron Keep looks like a Bowser's castle romhack it's because it's the SECOND Iron Keep: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXowyshRW0Q

I'd image one of the bigger problem is that the skeleton it harvests from is made out of past vs future pieces of the same map.
That in itself would have been fine if the areas where complete, but frankensteining that plus the asset streaming on the PS3 might lead to jihinx.

Same. I hated it for a long time but eventually I started to appreciate the things it did well and how unique it was in the series. It's a shit sequel but a cool game in its own right.

I get what he's going for. Dark Sould 2 is like a collection of From's surplus ideas turned into a game.
