You can polish the hell out of one area and make it sing, but once you try to replicate that level of detail across an entire interconnected world, performance, memory, and time all hit you like a brick. DS2 in particular feels like they designed the game in silos and then frantically taped it all together near the end. Still love it, but you can see the stitches.
