The gameplay is actually very good for a jrpg. You should already know if you like timing based attack/defense. That’s common enough but what the game does really well is offer build customization while still maintaining mechanical identity for each character. Each character has bespoke mechanics but you have gear and a bunch of slottable abilities to let you tune how the fit together. It’s very enjoyable given the game is working within the constraints of a very traditional “dudes in a row” turn based battle system.

It's not a bad game, but it definitely feels as if it's made to be entry level and easy for the modern audience to get into. One thing I don't like that people don't mention, the timed hits in this game are awful, in the sense that they feel like filler they put in for the sake of putting them in. None of the prompts match any sort of animation and they're just lazily slapped on.

Mainly because it appeals to my Western tastes as somebody who i not remotely interested in Otaku culture and thus lacks the frame of reference to appreciate Japanese storytelling. 31 years old. First game I ever played was Zelda 1. First console I ever owned was a Sega Genesis when I was 4. Have owned every console ever made since, have played pretty much everything, including all the old-school JRPGs (Suikoden, Final Fantasy games, Breath of Fire, Lunar, SMT) along with all of the great CRPGs.
Clair Obscur is far and above the best game this year with KCD2 being the closest.

It's a game for people who like games as experiences, kind of like new God of War. That's not really to say it has bad gameplay or something, it's just that the focus is on how the game makes you feel rather than how you actually play the game.
