yes, but later simplified versions made it better for normal gameplay and allows you to be a lot more flexible. ce and reach both did the health system, but it's fine. it was very well balanced.

Goddamn Halo feels so good to play. The feedback, ai, how enemies just work together as a cohesive squad. How Elites are both this toughened dangerous enemy, and yet still have self preservation to retreat from danger and recharge their shields, or can go into a berserk within melee range in a last ditch desperate effort. How grunts cower and flee when you take Elites down. fps's just dont do this. And this is 2001.

Honestly the 2 weapon limit revolutionized FPS games, pretty much every major FPS that came after had a 2 weapon limit.
And even then I think the Halo games were the only ones to take advantage of it in the arena formula, designing the game and the multiplayer arenas around forcing you to chose what to pick up and what to leave behind.

This is why a game can just be copy pasted rooms and it barely fucking matters because the different combinations of enemies, and just their ai, will produce different encounters every single time. The blue elite coming in to back up the red one, he goes down, and then retreats off. Insane. And this is why Halo's recharging health mechanic has virtually only ever worked in Halo. The feedback you get when you're dealing damage, what state of health an enemy is in, their behavior changing creating a constant balancing act of being aggressive or conservative. If you aren't being aggressive to finish Elites off than you're just back at square one when their shields recharge. Genius game design.

I played this for the first time, zero nostalgia, and I legit think it's an awful game with one of the worst level design I've ever seen, a childish afterthoughth of a story and like only 5 different enemies. No wonder it's baby's first fps when any pc shooter from the 90s is a million times better. Halo 2 is worse somehow all you do is wait in elevators in complete silence and drive through akwardly long corridors. Don't know why this series took off instead of other mid trash like killzone
