They are careful and take their time, which usually leads to stagnation and not as much advancement in various areas like some humans would. Surely, they might gain more knowledge over time, but in certain situations, a human could easily manage to somehow just bumrush his way through a magick grimoire and not necessarily learn everything carefully, as the elf would, but the human would just learn the general gist of whatever's the most important and then fuck up the elf with that experimental knowledge he gained out of just actually doing things instead of sitting around trying to soak everything in.
Elves are also generally not that fertile, and the reason they're not as numerous as the humans in most fantasy settings. Sometimes, it's likely they just have a similar limit age limit for pregnancies before they hit menopause or just become infertile or their cum weakens, for a short while when they're younger, and then basically the remaining hundred of years or so of their lives they just have to live with the fact they know they'll never be able to have a family cause they fucked up getting one while they were still young and in peak fertile condition. So that also sucks for them.
