SERIES S WAS THE DOWNFALL OF XBOX
If this system had included a disk drive and standard, upgradable storage rather than relying on proprietary solutions it likely would have seen far greater success.

They could have bundled it with a basic controller and allowed users to bring their own, helping offset the cost of adding a disk drive.

The concept of a midrange Xbox was solid, but the execution fell short unsurprisingly, given Microsoft’s track record.

People are financially stretched. Consoles often need to be sold at a loss, with profits made through services and ecosystem engagement. Now the consequences of not doing that are becoming obvious.

The Series S had real potential, especially for budget conscious consumers, but it lacked key features that would have made it a truly compelling option.

Yes, of course. It was the lack of a dvd player that killed xbox and not the fact that there are literally 0 (ZERO) exclusives anymore and you may as well buy a PC + PS5

If the switch exists why should Microsoft tap that market? Say what you will bit series s was a good deal at $250. Everything might be at min setting but at least you can play almost everything.

Was it that or the lack of games worth buying one for?

No, the Xbone was. The Xbone was everything Microsoft wanted in the Xbox project and it failed. You'll notice during that gen is when Microsoft started making moves to end the Xbox console.
>acquiring Mahjong
>Xbox Play Anywhere
>Xbox games on PC
>Xbox Cloud
>Xbox Game Pass
>Xbox One S All-Digital Edition
>Xbox Series S as a trojan horse for future handheld chips
>Bethesda and ABK purchase
The Xbox Series failure just gave Microsoft the ammo they needed to drop Xbox consoles entirely along with Nintendo and Sony saying no to Game Pass on their platforms. It was only a matter of time.

Exactly, if you could throw in your own storage it would more or less be a BARGAIN PC.

>Support PC controllers
>Having a disc drive off loads the disc space and also delivers to the neckbeards who are vocal about that stuff. Those people would champion the machine on social platforms thus drawing more people to it
>Consumer friendly storage lowers the financial entry encourages more game hoarding. Sales add up.

... anon they DID TRY.

It is but without the ability to add your own storage and or buy/trade/borrow games via disc ... its like getting a good deal on a car with no wheels.

I dunno ... being able to run retroarch on it without a modchip totally destroys the other option (PS5) if you want to argue variety of titles

Xbone was the 32X and Series S was the Saturn

Xbox was already dead by the time the Series consoles came, most dropped Xbox right after the One was finished and moved to PlayStation or PC as well. Microsoft always wanted the Xbox to be the ultimate living room device. When that failed, Xbox was pretty much dead. Xbox post-Mattrick was nothing more than a zombie console waiting to get taken out back. Microsoft finally decided to do just that.

The Series S not having a disc drive made it unpalatable for many curious people. At $299 with a disc drive you can forgive a lot of misgivings because it isn't going to kill you. From my perspective even if it had zero exclusive games, as someone who has never been an Xbox owner it would've provided backwards compatibility with the past Xbox consoles so I could get some value from there.

Unfortunately Phil Spencer, the greatest retard who remains head of Xbox, opted for an all digital hellscape console. The plan was Series S would be super popular in the turd world who rent games and stays there. For GamePass to work as a rental DRM shitstain service you need A LOT OF PEOPLE BUYING INTO THE CONSOLE ECOSYSTEM. So having a disc drive option negates this. So I understand his perspective and I'm glad his rental fuckery failed.
