What made Sonic 3 and Knuckles the best video game of all time?
>calling a sonic game the greatest of anything
>>714114418 (OP)>What made Sonic 3 and Knuckles the best video game of all time?idk. in some ways it definitely feels more distinct and tight when compared to 2. but it also feels a lot easier
>>714114418 (OP)>Big chunky shoes>Michael Jackson music>Press button, you can do a jump>SnowboardingIt was destined for greatness
>>714114418 (OP)It's cool, has a lot of memorable set pieces and one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. Imagine being a kid in 1994 and watching Sonic get launched from a cannon and then snowboarding down a mountain, or chasi g the Death Egg into space.
Sonic 2 already had one of the best rewards for collecting all the Chaos Emeralds being Super Sonic.
Sonic 3 and Knukcles gives you more playable characters with unique gimmicks that ALL get super/hyper transformations (except tails can only go hyper for some reason). HYPER mode you say? Yes because once you get the chaos emeralds, you get the super emeralds which lets you transform yet again into an even more overpowered state. No other game of this era had a reward system like this.
Sonic 3 and Knuckles also has tons of stages, act 1 and 2 have different music, some of the best video game music ever made at that (developed alongside THE Michael Jackson), of which the stages have huge amounts of verticality which means a ton of hidden secrets and alternate paths to take. And instead of there only being one boss at the very end, you now have a new mid-boss for each stage after Act 1, then a proper Robotnik battle in Act 2, for EVERY stage.
Not to mention the game tells a cool story but it tells it visually and through events that happen as you transition between the acts and stages. never wastes your time with stupid dialogue boxes and the story never overstays its welcome, but when you get to the end it's pretty crazy.
Not to mention Knuckles entire "path" plays completely different than Sonics and has access to areas that none of the other characters have. And that's without even getting into the beautiful spritework, the colors, the parallax scrolling and detailed backgrounds. All on a cartridge...well two cartridges stuck together which is cool in its own right.
On top of all that you get fucking SAVE FILES that don't require some shitty password to be entered. This was not the norm at the time. A game that saved on its own and allowed you to jump back in whenever you wanted was huge, and you had a ton of save file slots which led to me "100%ing" the game with each character, on multiple slots. It's just a great fucking game period. Play Sonic Air.
>>714114418 (OP)For me, it is the level design.
There is no bad zone but hidden palace, even the unpopular ones are great for me.
>>714116110Hidden palace is cool for the vibes alone though. That's the one level that puts gameplay aside to give you cool as cinematics and a battle with knuckles.

How does the DKC Trilogy compare to Sonic's trilogy?
>>714115907From the very get go the set pieces are insane.
>First zone, tropical paradise>Get the the end of the zone and some fucking machine sets everything on fire >Entire look of everything is different as the background is blazing, everything's on fire and there's a cool visual filter causing everything to "shimmer" and wave among the flames.Every stage does some cool ass shit in between act 1 and 2, and yeah even at the start of each new stage there's usually something badass happening. It's a visual spectacle every step of the way, but the gameplay remains fun with unique challenges/gimmicks for each stange and the levels have tons of options for how you want to explore them.
>>714116398DK 1 is a stronger game than Sonic 1.
DKC peaks with 2, whereas Sonic 2 is great but not exactly the peak of the series most would argue.
DKC falls off with 3 and Sonic peaks with 3&K. I think Sonic has more weight as a trilogy honestly. DKC is great though.
Loaded question (a logical fallacy, btw), it's not. The real best game of all time is Tetris The Grand Master 3: Terror-Instinct. FIND A FLAW.
>>714114418 (OP)Retroactively surpassed in 1991.
>>714116480>Every stage does some cool ass shit in between act 1 and 2, and yeah even at the start of each new stage there's usually something badass happening. One thing that always frustrated me from later Sonic games is that they never managed to make those kind of transitions again. I don't know why.
>>714116895Sonic Adventure games are the only ones that even come close. SA2 starting off with sonic dropping out of a helicoptor to "snowboard" down the sloped street of a metro area on a hunk of metal is badass. Sonic Adventure 1 also had some cool stuff like Sonic Snowboarding and the transitions to different areas of the stages. Lots of cool setpieces there as well, but the way they were implemented in both games whether it be the open hub in 1 or the cutscene heavy story of 2 is not really preferable to the peak of S3&K. Just the right blend of storytelling and coolness before it throws you into the level leads to a much better pacing.
>>714116884Okay, fine, Tetris 99 is the best game of all time.
>>714114418 (OP)Sonics 1 and 2 are the only good ones in the entire franchise.
3 and S&K have atrocious convoluted level design. And S&K has really awful music.
>>714117475... if Sonic 3 and Knuckles never existed.
>>714117626Nope, S3&K has flaws, TGM3 and Tetris 99 don't.
>>714116110>For me, it is the level design. You'd really like amiga platformers. They have that awful labyrinthine pointlessly large level design too.
>>714117685...Is what I tell myself.
>>714118136>Tetris 99.No matchmaking, pubstomps occur with little to no learning curve for average players/newbies
>TGM3Designed to be Tetris, but based on instinct, barely any skill is needed at that level and you're just forcing yourself to go through the motions- do not confuse this for reaction time and game sense.
>>714114418 (OP)Great controls and good levels.
>>714119042You really don't have anything to work with from TGM3, do you? Any form of Tetris involves skill. TGM3 is the best because it has 7bag AND Hold, the lack thereof being Tetris' disqualifier from being the best game ever made with earlier entries.
>>714119042Also, I'd mention PuyoTet but you'd probably say something like Tetris being overpowered, which it was before its release on later platforms. If speaking from a PURELY Tetris standpoint with a lack of Puyo in the equation, PuyoTet is also the best game ever made. There are zero flaws with how Tetris alone works in that game.

AHEM.
Twinkle Star Sprites.
>>714119402>>714119521>7bagYeah, like I said, based on instinct. I'd argue there's more skill without it.
>PuyoTetMusic and visuals suck
If I was forced at gunpoint to say what the perfect video game is, I'd say Portal.
>>714119958>I'd argue there's more skill without it.Nope, the lack of 7bag marred the previous Tetris games (such as the coveted Game Boy version) greatly.
>Music and visuals suckLike I said... You've got nothing to work with, from a gameplay standpoint.
But please, continue to pic related
>>714116612This.
And T-spins.
And seeing the next several blocks ahead, adding to the skill ceiling by making you strategize several moves ahead.
And no equivalent of Sandopolis Zone Act 2.
And no equivalent of Carnival Shite Zone.
>>714120250>But please, continue to pic relatedYou said point a flaw, and I proceeded to point flaws while you continue to add more games onto your list. You're literally the pot calling the kettle black lmao.
>>714120532Your complaints about TGM3 are superficial.
Nothing is wrong with the gameplay, compared to some zones/ gimmicks from S3&K.
>>714120634You asked to point flaws, I did. And now you're moving the goalpost telling me there's nothing wrong with the gameplay, despite mentioning the flaw.
On that same side of the coin, there is nothing wrong with S3&K's gameplay, and that nitpicking the zones and gimmicks (like 7bag and hold) are superficial.
>>714119958>I'd argue there's more skill without it.Fine, then. You'd argue that the Game Boy version of Tetris is the best game ever made. Zero flaws by your standards.
>>714119958>Music and visuals suckthe first game's music is fine but visuals i agree with since sega's style has been getting more and more stiff ever since 20th but i still think it's a decent tetris game i like 2 too but at that point and even to this day sega is obviously dickriding tetris so puyo can have any staying power over here despite the two sereis not meshing well together at all.
>>714120956You do know there are multiple aspects that make a game the best? You're trying too hard to prove your own arbitrary point regarding flaws. If I were to say every game has its flaws, and despite that, the good can outweigh the negatives to still be the best game, you'd have a meltdown. *I* didn't say anything about flaws, (You) did.
On the morning of 911, my father played:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8Oy2SUZjKc
on the cassette deck in his black Buick LeSabre, which is eerie as hell.
He used to mock me for my video game infatuation by saying,
"VIDEO GAMES VIDEO GAMES VIDEO GAMES VIDEO GAMES VIDEO GAMES" in a spazzy voice.
He drove me to school that morning, which I forgot to mention because it seems so obvious.
>>714114418 (OP)Expertly crafted exploration, action, music and setting with the one of a kind pinball physics gameplay that had been refined twice over
>>714114418 (OP)levels have alt paths and secrets out the ass while not sacrificing speed.
a large amount of levels.
3 characters to choose from.
this gives it an INSANE amount of replay value.
>>714114418 (OP)>you grew up with games like thisI was born just at the right time, unbelievable timing when you think about it.
>>714114418 (OP)>Sonic 3 and KnucklesFirstly it's 2 games;
>Sonic 3>Sonic and KnucklesTwo separate releases, two cartridges, two price tags, two games.
>>714114418 (OP)Being released outside the Genesis so people could pretend it was one single game all along and not two full priced ripoffs mashed together.
>>714124671>>714124787Was planned to be one game, is still one game basically with the Disc 1 Disc 2 gimmick, and today is sold together as one game.
It's one game.
>>714116817>Too late, Krabs! I've already drawn myself as the Chad, and YOU as the basedjak! The special stages and emeralds in 1 are better, but that's more than 100% overshadowed by the fact that without exaggerating, over half of the levels in Sonic 1 are dogshit.
>>714127621The picture you provided clearly displays two box arts for two games.
Also playing them not "locked on" provides a very different experience my child. Something you'll never likely experience because you were weren't even alive when these two games were released.
>>714127862A whole lot of mental gymnastics is going on over here. It was always intended to be one game, now that technology has advanced and proper planning has been made. It now stands as one complete experience as it was intended to be.
Cope.
>>714128416you will never be able to listen to the proper S3 MJ music
you will never experience the level differences sonic and knuckles has individually
