Think of it as a less technically demanding PM, PM is definitely the closest analogue. Every character so far is competitively viable, and the character balance is very good despite how distinct each character is. You can easily spend 100 hours learning a single character, although it only takes an hour or two to suss out whether they appeal to you.

There's a mechanic called floorhugging. Think of it as crouch cancel (which also exists), but you can do it as long as a move doesn't send you into tumble (which depends on the move and characters' weights). Doing it makes you take extra damage, so it's sort of meant to counter people mashing weak options that can potentially convert into combos.

tl;dr everyone is holding down. The biggest change is that it makes a lot of safe options that weren't AFHable FHable. Olympia, for example, got hit hard by the change even though she didnt have a single change herself. I think it's generally good because it can counter obnoxious options, but it's a double-edged sword: I've play Olympia and I feel like my approaches at low %s are more linear since late hit bair is consistently FH'd now. But one good combo or two grab combo is usually enough to get your opponent out of FH %s.

Anyone else just see through fighting games at this point? They are all just time sinks that ultimately betray you in the end. RoA was basically the perfect logical step after learning from decades of nintendo platfighters. The genre had so much to offer, but suffered from a lot of major flaws like throws being too over centralized, shields either being worthless or broken in each game, and the ledge just being utter cancer to deal with. What did Roa do? It cut all three of those things and continued to develop the fun aspect of this genre: the neutral, DI mind games, etc. Now that there's a sequel that ditched all of those ideas, and the original game is turbo dead. Makes me jealous of sports players. You can play tennis for decades and never fear the dreaded Tennis 2 that fucks with all the things you loved about the original tennis.

Oh I agree. But you also have grabs from say, forsburn that all lose to do out. Grabs in general, at least for me, should focus more on resetting neutral or setting up short combos at early percents or getting offstage at high. Claire's bthrow and fthrow 50/50 is hella annoying and isn't even enjoyable to do as clairen, I do hope they change it while giving her something to compensate.

Fighting games aren't really a scam by default (unlike sports games, oof), the biggest problem with them is that they always, and I mean ALWAYS watch helplessly as the playerbase raises the skill floor over and over forever and there's no way to stop that, as the good players push the bad ones out and it becomes a circlejerk of like 50 people just fighting each other, and Steam sales introduce some new blood that just get eaten and spat out.

Dunno if it's a hot take, but releasing sequels to fighting games that update the graphics (and hopefully some of the backend code stuff), while screwing over the veterans with changes to get them to dip in skill level for a while is really kind of a win-win for everyone but the 30 veterans still playing amongst each other. Can't really run a game when you've got a tiny handful of players that slowly leave over time as they consistently push anyone new out.

I think it's why I prefer when fighting games at least include some kind of singleplayer aspect to it, like Soul Calibur with its story mode, it gets people up to speed at least a little (hopefully teaching them about combos and shit instead of just "go do these 50 generic fights and then watch the credits without learning shit") and it means they're less likely to get gigafucked as fast when/if they dip their toes into PVP.

Nearing 40 here and I did burn like 15 years on the genre with nothing to show for it. It's one of those things no one should invest themself into beyond friendly drunk mashing at a party with friends offline. So much time, money, investment and passion just pissed into the wind.
