I hated Halo 1. Is this game also fucking shit?

Same, I couldn't even finish Halo 1. It was so fucking mind numbingly boring.

if you hated the first game why bother trying to checkout its sequel?

Halo 2 was the bellwether for Xbox Live and Bungie concentrated their efforts on the deathmatch game. This meant the campaign was neglected, and old weapons like the shotgun were nerfed to make the deathmatch more balanced. Halo 1 had a badass shotgun with good range, whereas in Halo 2 it was practically a melee weapon, only effective at short range. Enemy AI seemed weaker in Halo 2, especially in encounters with the Flood.

If you didn't like the first Halo campaign, you won't like this one.

That really fuck with me. I grew up with everything Halo that wasn't the games since I never owned an xbox. I recenty took time to look at the Master Chief collection I've owned and haven't touched for a couple of years now.
I started with ODST since I liked the idea of not being a super solider for once--and it sucked. Then I tried Halo Reach and it was better but it was still mind numbing. Maybe Bungie just didn't perform here so I tried going back to the roots for later comparison and tried CE (which I had found memories of the demo I downloaded and played more than a decade ago as the only Halo I had some access to) which was alright but really felt old and Halo 2 which was well not that good.
Halo 3 finally was alright and I actually finished it. Halo 4 felt decent.

After all this said and done I genuinely don't get Halo. weren't these games contemporary with some of the more influential Call of Duty games? I don't really like shooters but Modern Warfare 4 was some kino shit back in the day. Halo has such an interesting premise but it falls flat in game play and actual in game story telling.

Somehow every game really wants you to drive a warthog and watch some NPC mindlessly shoot into thin air while being killed by Grunts. With all of them played in short succession that theme really sticks out. These shitty Warthogs. I rather walked.
I can only conclude that Bungie never really made good games, they just made a fun shooter in its time for xbox.

probably depends on what you like/dislike might be better to go off of that
2 certainly tightens up a lot of the drawbacks with CE's level deign

>Halo 4 felt decent
halo 4 is always the one people universally deride, what did you like about it?

There's more like 8 and that's 7 more than most FPS games

Halo stood on the story and world of the trilogy, which is a genuinely good scifi world, before 4 retconned the whole thing. AND the multiplayer. Being in my teens at the time, the xbox live and splitscreen multiplayer combined with the explosive physics in the engine provided unlimited tense and hilarious moments and

Halo's philosophy is you design something fun and then stretch that fun multiple times, but the designer(s) did not account the repetitiveness of it.

Is there any FPS campaign that isn't repetitive?

I’m not that anon, but I had a lot of fun with CE, my biggest complaint is how every level is kinda the same when there’s an interior. You end up on that walkway with the round room over and over. Outside of that it was really fun to play. I enjoyed it much more with a mouse.

In that regard 2 and all future Bungie games save for ODST massively improve on level variety/design. There isn't 2 hours of the same Forerunner interiors.

it’s easy to criticize halo on retrospect but for the time the game played very smoothly and had a good pace. the weapons were interesting and so were the settings and getting to drive the vehicles. compare halo 2 to something like timesplitters 2 which came out two years before. both great games but halo 2 was an improvement on the concept
