I think DK64 would have been better if it was slightly more open ended. Instead of character specific bananas they should have given you ways to use each character to get certain bananas but left it open for you to get creative and get them with anykong. That way you are encouraged to use the other characters but not forced into it and it would hopefully feel less like busywork.

no because other times DK rides Rambi. but sometimes he can turn into him too. depends on the game/level. DKC2 has both animal crates that give animal companions as a mount and the barrels that turn you into the animals themselves. it's a mechanical thing, when you are riding the animal a hit knocks you off and sends them running ala Yoshi from SMW, but when you are the animal any hit you take counts as one kong. imagine trying to argue anything when it's obvious you've never actually played the games

As much as I like the DKC series, it always made me seethe that Rare basically used the character of DK just to make their own series and neglected him. It's ridiculous that he was only playable in 1 out 3 DKC games, wasn't even in Diddy Kong racing at all, and is only one of multiple characters in DK64. Nintendo should have had a tighter leash on them when it came to those things. But Nintendo also over-corrects things.

I like that DK springboarded Diddy Kong as his own character but also led way for Banjo and even Conker. He didn't need to be in DKR, the whole point was that Diddy was a big enough star to headline his own game. In contrast, Mario's 3D games always leave out Luigi for the most part, and I wish they'd stop with that. I wanted him as a playable character in Odyssey and Luigi's Mansion is really not my cup of tea, mainly the follow-ups. DKC3 was a misstep with Kiddy Kong, but otherwise, I like that DK had a huge cast to work with and I hate the modern day philosophy of downscaling shit to save on costs or worse, cutting out 'filler'. DKL3 is the best in that series easily. DKL1 has interesting ideas but is let down by a weird movement system that feels sluggish. They fixed this in DKL2 but I dock points from that one for basically being just a GB version of DKC2. Land 3 is the best of the 3. It's pretty much Country 3 minus gimmick levels. The level themes are taken from Country 3 but the level designs and even boss fights are original and the controls are extremely refined to actually feel good. Land 1 is good besides the janky physics and level design but at least everything is entirely original. Land 2 is by far the worst. The levels themselves aren't even original and it's pretty much a Country 2 port but worse. The music variety is awful. Lockjaw Saga plays in half the levels.
