I started playing fallout with fallout 2, I enjoyed it although it could get tedious at times and had a huge learning curve. I have played 3, 4, and 76 as well. I recently started playing NV again and I just don't see what's so great about it.

1) The game railroads you through the plot throwing creatures at you to kill you if you try to explore.

2) I found no good reason for my character to get involved in the main plot beyond killing Benny.

3) an empty desert is the worst setting. I spend about 10 minutes walking somewhere on the horizon that looks interesting only to find there's nothing there and the building is boarded up. It's like no effort was put into anything that doesn't connect to the main plot.

4) it's cool that you can use multiple ways to solve a quest but most weren't that great to begin with.

I will say The DLCs are a bit of a saving grace and pretty fun. I want to like this game but I just don't see it.

You're clearly too dumb to form your own opinion and on top of that you're coming to other people to form one for you
Anyone actively entertaining your idiotic ass in this thread is just as dumb as you are and you all deserve each other

I think a lot of the fans don't really play CRPGs so they're impressed by some player agency and reactivity. that's really not enough to save it from being a popamole console FPS with all the open world quest marker fast travel sins of modern gaming

Let's see if I can help any.

>The game railroads you through the plot throwing creatures at you to kill you if you try to explore.
Not entirely true. While the intended path is along the road, there are three paths you can take to go north instead. Path 1 takes you through cazadores, and the second through deathclaws, the third, through black mountain. Black mountain is relatively easy, the deathclaws you can get past if you use a stealth boy, the cazadors can be dealt with using explosives. They all have answers, they just aren't free.
>found no good reason for my character to get involved in the main plot beyond killing Benny.
If you have no interest in the premise of the game, that's kinda on you, but i get it. I have the same complaint with 3.
>an empty desert is the worst setting. I spend about 10 minutes walking somewhere on the horizon that looks interesting only to find there's nothing there and the building is boarded up. It's like no effort was put into anything that doesn't connect to the main plot.
Unlike 3 and 4, NV has most of its interesting locations tied to quests, either main or side. If you want an exploring game, NV probably just isn't what you're looking for, and that's fine.
>it's cool that you can use multiple ways to solve a quest but most weren't that great to begin with.
Depends what you want from your quests I suppose. I like my political quests, some people don't. .
>I will say The DLCs are a bit of a saving grace and pretty fun. I want to like this game but I just don't see it.
I'll be honest anon, it sounds like you gave it an honest try, and it's just not for you.
if you're up to give another Obsidian RPG a try, may I suggest Tyranny? It's short, but pretty fun. Good if you like doing evil runs in games.

Love me some NV. But honestly most Isometric CRPGs do a good job of it. Owlcat's games, BG3 to an extent, hell, even other obsidian games like Tyranny or PoI do pretty decent with it too.

I replayed new vegas this year and thought it was great. I wish bethesda did more spin-offs like it. Especially for the elder scrolls games

OP never mentioned FO2.
It's pretty clear how they talk about exploration, they're a fan of Bethesda's typical style. So, they're probably coming for FO3, FO4, or even Skyrim.

arcanum and age of decadence come to mind
I think new vegas is fairly good at immediate reactivity (most skill/perk checks, reputation stuff, faction armor) but it's kind of lacking in long term reactive consequences.

Theyโ€™re kinda autistic about not sharing their IPs too much. A shame because a prime Arkane game made in TES would have been kino

I can't help you, I think it is very boring. Most of your time is spent walking and clicking through dialog. The writing, supposedly a strength of the game, is incredibly mediocre and unnatural. One thing the game does well is having many branching dialog paths but that sort of thing doesn't appeal to me much. Despite the multiple prhs and possibilities I found it mostly frustrated me because none of the choices usually match what I want to do and it ends up as an illusion of freedom.

dead money was fun (I like survival horror). what's not fun? game constantly crashing on mormon dlc, bull and bear, boring combat, boring setting. It's okay but overrated to high sky.

>1) The game railroads you through the plot throwing creatures at you to kill you if you try to explore.
Going north out of Goodsprings is honestly not that hard. Cazadors eat shit to any shotgun, even the basic shit you have access to out of Goodsprings, you just need to go slow and watch your compass. Aside from that I think this is mostly going to be down to preference; the leveled spawns in Fallout 3 and leveled loot lists are strict enough that it takes a lot of fun out of exploring most locations. Unless you bumble into Old Olny or the Deathclaw Sanctuary there's very little danger of bumping into something out of your depth. Conversely, when you're level 30 the game throws albino rads, deathclaws, yao guai, etc. at you by the fist full and it's just a slog. I find I prefer New Vegas' solution of having more structured NPC locations. Yeah it feels a bit gamey having Goodsprings hemmed in as much as it is, but I like dangerous animals and different factions having more defined territory.

>2) I found no good reason for my character to get involved in the main plot beyond killing Benny
I mean that's just a you thing. I hate the way FO3 and 4's main quests are structured because they do so much heavy lifting on your background but almost any capable dude could fit into New Vegas' plot.

>3) an empty desert is the worst setting
Ironically the empty desert is half of what I like about 3. But it's just a different design ethos than Bethesda. Obsidian didn't have a lot of time so most locations had to be tied to a quest rather than just being their own thing. The game as a whole revolves way closer around its core plot than the Bethesda ones. In some ways I think that's better since it kept Obsidian from generating its own Arefu.

>DLCs
Dead Money is probably my favorite part of NV. It's a bummer my current dude is a gun guy because I'm going to miss the Holorifle.

Not much left to say then. Not everything is for everyone. But NW is unadulterated kino of the highest order. Deeply flawed yes, but one of those few rare games that tried, kind of like Bloodborne. And the end result is a game that has yet to meet its match.

not sure why you skipped 1. go back and play it, it's less tedious and doesn't have the fucked balance of 2
also check out some total conversion mods for 2. 1.5 resurrection and sonora are on par with, if not better than, 1 and 2
