he's right, I threw $20 at zomboid and got 1k+ hours of fun out of it, most AAA titles can't even get close to that price-performance ratio

Adulthood is realising that roguelikes are a cop-out because developers don't want to have to design levels or tune their difficulty balancing/progression.

If I don't get 1 hour of fun per dollar I spent I consider the game a bad game. There are very, very VERY few AAA games that can live up to this standard, because they're expensive as fuck and they're designed with like 20 hours of content to move you onto the next slop as fast as possible. Whereas with indie games, I find myself meeting or exceeding that threshold nearly every time.

Even if an indie game is a 2 hour 2d action platformer I spent $10 on, if the game is fun I'm obviously going to replay it every now and then, just like I emulate classic games in the genre every couple of months, eventually surpassing the 10 hour mark. When's the last time you replayed ANY $80 AAA game? They're disposable garbage.

the thing is you get older, you get a job, and you stop having so much free time
its one thing for a game to have 1k hours of depth and another for it to have 100 hours of depth with 900 hours of busy work mixed in
some people like that aspect of course but not me

Platformers maybe, but the other two are some of the most heavily padded genres made specifically to sink large amounts of time into relatively little gameplay.
May as well play survival crafting at that point.

because anon said "Millennials can't reach true adulthood as youre still playing games from childhood" implying childish stupid bullshit like JRPG nonsense and bing bing wahoo, which you then went on to claim that simply stopping playing with childish toys like that means "you're literally embracing death bro" which is overdramatic as fuck

I agree, but not every game needs to be replayable or enjoyable for hundreds of hours. Still, aside from Elden Ring I honestly can't name the last AAA game I bought, much less one I paid full price for. I recently got back into modded Minecraft with a friend group I usually play Zomboid with. It's wild to think about how a game I bought over a decade ago for $15 I'm still getting new enjoyment out of. AAA could never even begin to scratch the surface of that kind of longevity or value. DRG is by far my most played game on steam with 1.1k hours. That was also $15.

It's honestly painful that AAA studios, even in their decline, are still as successful as they are. I honestly have no clue why the masses eat up getting raped like that so hard for a truly mediocre product. Indies are king. They aren't beholden to publishers or top down studio management, which allows them so much more freedom to stick to their guns or listen to the community they've garnered and give them what they want. Either way they go, it results in a better game than something designed by a board to either keep you addicted to some live-service skinnerbox game or to have you move on from one $70 AAA experience to the next every year.

If anything, when I got older and had an actual career and family, I stopped buying games at all and only play the same things I've enjoyed in the past. The last major purchase I made (Over $5) in video games was Frostpunk 1 in like 2020. It's been nothing but retro games for NES/SNES/PSX, Quake, and a few newer games like FTL, DotA, and Path of Exile that have kept me occupied.

This hasn't stopped me from buying indie games on sale for $5 or whatever, but most of them sit unplayed or played for five minutes and so I try not to bother anymore. Even when I forced myself to download demos and play them during NextFest, I didn't play anything for over an hour or so. With my time limited, I'd rather just come back to an old favorite than try and pick up something new and have to waste an hour or so learning how to play.

There hasn't been a AAA game published since the end of 2011.
Large and overbudgeted games perhaps, but nothing that suggest competent and coherent management of a large team of skilled developers. AAA isn't just a word, it implies a secure return on investment and practically all of these "AAA studios" are just as likely to flop and die as they are to produce slop and continue meandering on.

This. Gameplay concept and execution has to be absolute fire for a roguelike to stay fun for any amount of time. When being roguelike IS your selling point, then you fucked up.
