I think leftist devs universally have some degree of an underdog mentality when designing factions, and the best example of this that I can think of was the Saints Row reboot. The protagonists are this gaggle of quirky sometimes queer-coded characters who act like Peter Venkman/Deadpool and are very likely self-inserts of the developers into their own power fantasy. Meanwhile, the antagonists resemble something of an actual killer gang like in the original SR games. Ironically, when such protagonists come across as obvious Mary Sue characters, it winds up turning the serious, straight-tone antagonists into the ACTUAL underdogs that players wind up wishing were the actual playable characters (just look at some of the comments of the SR Reboot trailer).
