>>714150612 (OP)>80s/90sdesign everything from the ground up, basically starting with sand and moving up to a console
>early 2ksok, maybe that's inefficient. maybe we should at least let people compile C into assembly for our consoles instead of expecting them to know assembly for our single use processor that will only get used in our cartridge based console.
>PS4/XB1you know what? fuck it. let's just use x86. our console is near-peer with PC anyway and now we can bag multiplats easy. more money for everyone
if you don't miss dedicated hardware, you have no heart. if you want it back, you have no brain. i fondly remember the days of everything having exclusives for very legitimate technical reasons, when consoles had a distinct look and feel across games due to graphics being constrained by hardware limitations, when multiplats were rarely ever the same game across consoles. it was fun and unique and fit the vibe of the times. all that being said, what we have now is better for everyone involved.
devs can get games out the door quicker (if they're talented), companies no longer have to try to wrangle people into learning their specific hardware, gamers can have crossplay multiplayer games that generally work well seeing as how it's all largely the same under the hood.
