I was reading some shit by a guy who was involved in tank design, and he was talking about how stupid walking tanks are, because there's so many ways for them to fuck up. Scifi stuff chalks the design up to being all-terrain, but that's what treads are for.

Wow, it's almost as if there's a reason why we use vehicles to transport stuff.

i mean yeah. but it is effective at visually representing to the player the importance of logistical planning and the incumberence mechanics, while lending an often-serious game a certain comic relief

i don't know shit about shit but if we hypothetically had the tech to make a mech that could consistently walk without toppling over like a retard, it would probably be best for snowy terrain or shallow water where the snow or water might be deeper than treads can reasonably handle. basically any environment where we already see animals like moose and flamingos using their long skinny legs to get around.

Rule of cool overrides any real world issues though. It has to be cool in the first place though.

The Mad Cat was what got me into Battletech, and I'd risk life and limb to drive one if it really existed, but Battletech has a lot of weird pseudoscience that's impractical.

I'm more saddened by the fact mechs in games don't have half the agility mechs in the books do, especially the travesties that are the cucknadian Mechwarrior games.

Yeah. The Mad Cat is supposed to haul ass and be basically an assault mech on a heavy chassis. But it's slow as balls.

I didn't even mean just speed. Mechs in books can literally play basketball and do all sorts of retarded shit like that. Mechs in games can't even crouch anymore. Don't even get me started on how fucking dogshit electronic warfare in the nuMechwarriors is.
