People still paid tens of thousands of dollars for rare skins just to be able to have them on the official valve servers here and now. Not only was "maybe in twenty years the valve servers will shut down and I'll get the skin for free on a custom server" not enough to dissuade them, but "I can go on a custom server and get that skin for free RIGHT NOW" was not enough.
