The problem is that most black characters being made now are for liberal brownie points, not to make interesting characters. There are dozens upon dozens of black characters that /v/ seems to love, primarily from older games, because they are characters that had actual thought put into them beyond a diversity quota. No one hates the Demoman, Coal Train, Barrett or other black characters.
Fucking everyone loves Coach from Left 4 Dead 2, because he's cool as fuck and clearly was made to be a likable and interesting character, not just to be a token. Also the game takes place in the South, so it would make sense that two out of four of the main characters are black Americans. They don't feel forced or out of place.

on a personal level i find it hard to "hate" or dislike companions in games, but of course some are better written and more interesting than others. my opinion of companions depends on who i'm role-playing as, for example a chud shephard would not recruit or kill wrex, not activate grunt and sell legion to cerberus. you seldom have the option to take every companion along all the time so why not roleplay in a way that makes you focus on certain companions in a playthrough?

The Last of Us 1 made Ellie and Joel's developing relationship feel more legit with how she starts as this useless prop, then there's the first time she saves you by whacking a brick into a guy's head, or how she handles eventually having a gun.

Compare to Garrus. ME1 had quite simple combat but powers and skills made a difference. He wasn't overtly powerful compared to the rest of the team but he could send geth haywire and pick locks, and a long-range combatant was handy. In ME2, it was a little different but he SCOPED AND DROPPED which would have been annoying except he was doming mercs like a madcunt.

ME3 I didn't really feel any difference for anyone, so only established characters really have much ingame "feel" to them, if you know what I mean.
