Your favourite videogames could become unplayable and go offline without any way to play them, and there's nothing you can do about it.
>Oh but I only play singleplayer games
Doesn't matter. Nowadays, most major games are playable online because of DRM even if they're singleplayer so they can still pull the plug on it whenever they want. There are precedents for this.
Not even piracy can solve this.
You will neve own anything, and you will be happy....
Unless?

why the fuck do shills keep making this argument over and over? have they not read what the initiative is about? do they really think epic games STILL has to keep up servers for unreal tournament 99? the master server is in the community's hands once epic shut it down, and even without it, you can make dedicated servers that you can join directly by just IP address.

>>714173143No, developers almost always offered dedicated servers for their games up until 2008 or so, right around GFWL started being used in games in attempt to straggle people on official servers only. Thankfully many games from that era were modified to have proper multiplayer again today without the need of official servers, but that was the death of dedicated servers. Steam today still has a menu for these servers so you can keep track of every single Source/Goldsrc game's servers without even having to launch the game. Terraria is a modern example that includes a server .exe with the game, you can even play with your friend that has a pirated copy that way, just like old games.

Instead of fighting to own your games, you are fighting so someone can guarantee your games but never letting you actually own it, for example selling a fork and using the money of the sales to fund the servers would still be illegal
If this happens, what I actually want will be less likely to happen as the IP situation will be entrenched in one more regulation, even harder to remove in the future

Another thing worth remembering is that corporations are not required to keep download links for digital games you have purchased, especially when the links are associated with hardware that is no longer manufactured.
See how Nintendo states in no uncertain terms that the service where it makes its digital games available for download is not for life, and that the service may be discontinued as soon as Nintendo deems it convenient.
This is particularly relevant in the case of new consoles because many physical games are actually digital (I estimate that this will be the case for 80% of physical Switch 2 games).

WTF I just signed and now my walls are covered in mold
Ubisoft deliberately shut down a couple of its live-service games to prompt EU governments to divert resources toward investigating the "Stop Killing Games" movement.
Now look at the bigger picture,
what are they trying to cover up?
>#metoo, boys club culture, other internal scandals, deflecting attention from damaging HR-related lawsuits or further investigations into workplace practices
>shutting down older live-service games could be a calculated move to cut costs while framing it as a consumer rights issue
>for Ubisoft, a manufactured controversy like Stop Killing Games could mask operational failures by redirecting scrutiny to a broader industry issue
>Ubisoft could control the narrative, pushing for limited reforms (e.g. offline modes for The Crew 2 and Motorfest) while avoiding stricter regulations on their DRM or monetization models
>by focusing public attention on game preservation, they could sidestep scrutiny over how they store, use, or dispose of player data after shutting down servers, especially if past breaches or vulnerabilities were at risk of exposure
>by keeping the gaming community focused on consumer rights, Ubisoft might avoid deeper discussions about worker rights or internal dissent.
>this could also distract from questions about their strategic direction, including potential mergers, acquisitions, or divestitures that might be under consideration behind closed doors.
