Not really. Microsoft's initial domination was almost an accident (gaylo-cawadooty era, ps3's awful pricing and architecture) and, confirming that, they had no idea what to do with it as they lost their lead at the end of the 7th gen and then never got it back.

They did.
For the Wii especially most of what the console got in terms of the biggest games ranged from nothing to absurdly cut down "equivalents" of existing games. Talking the Dead Space rail shooter, the two Resident Evil rail shooters, that very cut down release of Dead Rising... did the Wii even have a Street Fighter game? Its Call of Duty titles were all severely gimped, really the only "major franchise" that stuck for the entirety of the Wii was Just Dance.
The Wii also was a bowing out of the console war. The focus became on how Nintendo could uniquely appeal and form a unique userbase distinct from other platforms that wanted specifically Nintendo products. You could view that as a say in the war, but that is a completely different viewpoint than what Nintendo had every generation prior, where they directly competed with other manufacturers and took losing titles like Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy as significant blows.

Even saying "Nintendo gets the newest games" isn't entirely true. The Switch basically missed the entire Yakuza series, every Final Fantasy game, Kingdom Hearts 3 and all the newest RE titles only got late cloud only versions. Certainly it's getting more than the prior systems got in terms of support, but it's not exactly like how it was in the pre-Wii days.

Sony, since the PS2, has been making pre-built PCs essentially. They were more transparent about that when they let you put your own OS on the consoles, but that has always been what they were doing since the PS2.
Xbox exists specifically for that reason.
Nintendo stopped competing with this. That's what happened. You cannot genuinely look at how Nintendo handled itself from the NES to the GCN and go "Yeah, what they're doing with the Wii, Wii U, and Switch is exactly the same".
They no longer aim for cutting edge hardware. They no longer desire having all "current" third parties on their platforms. Their primary focus has shifted from a console environment to a brand environment, where the primary reason in purchasing a Nintendo console is for the Nintendo ecosystem of titles, with third parties being a bonus.

It's not surprising since the average person doesn't buy consoles on release, so the absurd PS3 prices or the early 360 release didn't matter. When it really mattered, during mid to late gen, Microsoft fucked up and went all in on Kinect garbage, which no one fucking cared, those who did already had a Wii.
Not to mention that Xbox was never a big brand outside of US, and Microsoft just couldn't grow it even with the relative success of 360.

It was always a battle for second place and Sony didn't pivot to gimmick shit entirely like Microsoft mid generation. The PS Move was treated like a novelty and no teams were taken off big titles to makes games for it. Kinect on the other hand was pushed as the next big thing and every first party studio at Microsoft had to utilize it, especially later when it was decided that every Xbone would need to have it.
People say the Xbox lost at the announcement for the new console but really that commitment to Kinect doomed them from 2010 onwards
