Change your support cards acording to what your horse needs and try to focus on increasing bond levels until they turn orange so you can get the most out of them. Change how you distribute stats based on your Uma's skills, running type and track length affinity, and try to focus on making her feel great for that 20% bonus, it adds up in the long run.
There's an option that disables quick mode and/or fast-forward if you get a previously unseen cutscene, it's great.

>Basically long and end runners are terrible in career mode because alot of the competitors will gas out (run out of stamina) and block you. Also you have up to 18 racers. Player PVP is a different animal since players are not horribly gassing out in large groups right in front of you and races include less people so less chance to be blocked.

>To be a successful end runner you need skills to go around other players more reliable, speed for passing, stamina to not gas out, power to get back up to full speed after your numerous passes, and wits to actually use your dang skills. You also need highly specific skills to be reliably successful. Golshi (Gold Ship) has a good base because she has an early game positioning skill and a more reliable mid to end game rush skill baked in. So mostly you just need another velocity skill or two and a couple endurance skills.

>Front Runners and to a lesser extent Pacers can ignore most of this. You need speed, stamina, and wits. Anything that makes sure you gas out or increases your velocity on any track. Train a majority of the time. Race on dead turns when training doesn't give that huge of an advantage/out of energy/no supports showed up/etc. Or if you have an objective that's a fan requirement.
You also need fans to upgrade your unique skill during a run, there are thresholds during year 3 that check your fan count.
If you're just starting out though don't worry too much about doing extra races, just focus on clearing your objectives.
