In MMOs it is 100%. In rpgs in general it CAN work, but it kinda has to be the sole focus and completely designed around it, but people really like it. Return of Reckoning (Warhammer Online private servers) is a prime example regarding the futility of discouraging zerging. So much shit was tried and its still impossible to stop people from zerging. Ironically zerging is a direct result of RvR with only 2 factions. Aion is repeating its mistake by making Balair yet again an NPC Faction instead of a playable race.

Well I just meant more on the technical side of things, the latency in networking for stuff like any of the souls games or any MMO is so insanely bad that it removes basically all skill from the PvP in favor of other dumb crap like abuse of the netcode or better ping (which is true in all online pvp games to some extent, but is extremely obvious in games where pvp is secondary or an afterthought)

I liked the original Aion despite the tedious grind but only an insane person would expect anything good out of NCSoft.

Let me tell you about the Daeva Gear sets in Aion. On release you were able to get some top of the line gear sets which were pretty good considering all you had to do was to do some menial grind or craft an item with critical success. Easy right?

Wrong, the one step that broke a lot of people was the grind to get the Hot Heart of Magic which you only get by getting a critical success if you craft a Heart of Magic. That shit requires 50 Hot Balaur Bloodstains which only drop from certain max level mobs with a very low drop rate which are as you guessed overfarmed. Suppose you somehow farmed 500 Bloodstains which basically allows you to craft the Heart of Magic 10 times, so you have only 10 Chances to get a critical success (which has a chance to also fail).
500 Balaur Stains would take people months to farm for a meagerly 10 tries. It was so autistic people started making shit up about crafting bevause they noticed out of 2000 crafts they got 2 more critical successes for an item while they had Full DP. The Hot Heart of Magic birthed bro science in crafting.

Haven't played recent MMOs since Lineage 2, but can't they just make a huge penalty if you zerg players? In L2 you would be flagged as a PK, and you risked dropping gear if you got killed. You were also attacked by NPC guards and couldn't enter cities.

basically you could flag up anywhere outside of town but you risked losing karma. too much karma lost resulted in you turning red. being red meant you could be killed on sight without repercussion for the other player, and dying sent you to jail and could result in gear destruction. the devs even made an entire town for exclusively for red players.
this was all shelved and never expanded upon because people were soft

No, not even close. The CBT and launch were pretty good but there was literally nothing to do at max level, worst content drought I've seen in any MMO honestly. Came back a few years later and you just got some weird heirloom type weapon that was oneshotting BAMs and leveled up with you (unless I remember wrong).
Only "people" left were some Elin weirdos ERPing. This is all without me even getting into the fact that global servers had like 50% of the FPS of the Korean version due to the UI for global being fucking Java or flash or some shit kek

I bought Aion on release and it was fucking terrible. It finally woke us up to how awful other MMO's are when it came to the leveling up experience. I know they rebalanced it multiple times later on but by that point nobody cared anymore and the game died.

The first Aion was shit. It was beyond grindy even for an MMO, it lacked any QoL features that were standard, and had the worst player cap I have ever seen in an MMO. The only reason it had success was because quality looking MMOs were still rare and it was different to the other shit that was out of the time so the novelty got it a lot of favour initially.
It survived as long as it did because of it's original Korean player base but even then it barely changed. If you think the sequel of Aion is going to be any better, let alone GotY, then you have no idea what you're talking about.
