I played it in the Collection of Mana when it came out a few years ago. It was awesome, I love Link's Awakening but I had to recognize this was just as impressive and came out first.

I played it recently and had a lot of fun with it, even though I ran out of keys in the last dungeon and had to go searching for a skeleton spawn. Thought I was soft locked initially. It's a simple game but does what it does really well. Tried Sword of Mana afterward, but it never clicked with me. It feels kind of overdesigned, with the day-night cycle meaning you have to enter towns up to 4 times to see all NPCs, jumping which felt utterly pointless as a mechanic, and the weird fucking class system you have to look up a guide for. I ended up replaying Secret of Mana instead

I was really impressed with how well they implemented all that in a GB game in '91. Even the magic works surprisingly well. I feel like a modern-day indie game could easily copy FFA and make something great. Imagine just having more than two buttons and weapon switching being more convenient

Adventures is alright, it's really just the same game as the original but with bugfixes, better movement, some QoL and a new layer of paint.
You can even choose to use the chiptune BGM rather than the arranged one, which is still extremely good, so it's not a bad deal at all.

Yeah pretty much. It had the first game which was really solid, and it had 3 which was a bit rough but neat and had coop and a cool remake, but that's really it. There were some that were not great but mildly interesting (Legend of mana) and then others that were just straight up terrible (Secret of Mana).

the first one really was the best and no one has ever really surpassed it for all the things it did right.

Which Final Fantasy Legend was Secret of Mana? I played the 3D one and that one sucked dick. 3D did not mix well with this type of game. It was like it was trying to be an action game but still using 2D mechanics. Even the movement felt off.

It was the first RPG I completed. It took me pretty long and I was probably overleveled as fuck, but even finishing a game was so rare for me, that it left an impression. I still remember the feels after reaching the ending.

The concept art for bosses and monster is also extremely soulful

Both FF1 and FF2 are Kawazu's games, yes, SaGa is more relevant to those two and a better successor to both than the rest of FF is, but it's still very much its own series at the end of the day.
SaGa and Mana are also sister series that intermingle with each other quite a bit, Frontier has many Mana cameos from the Thunder Dragon to Rabis, Minstrel Song has a questline that reenacts the Red Mage's section from FFA and so on, both were born because their creators didn't want to work on FF anymore but got to keep working on things that they first implemented in those games.
