Anyway sell me on Nioh 1 if i liked Dark Souls 1 and 2 but hated 3.
I love Ninja Gaiden 1 and vanilla NG2 but I know that team ninja has been incompetent ever since it's release, so I don't expect Nioh to have nearly as good action as NG. How is it as an RPG?

Ninja is actually super satisfying if you become proficient at class switching depending on what you need to do. Basically all good players developed a style where they synergize samurai and ninja modes instead of using one of them exclusively.

yeah, I'm sure samurai just feels so much better because that's what I have 1000+ hours of practice on already, whereas ninja is something I need to learn from scratch

People can say anything about Nioh 2's story but the finale was fucking incredible, easily among the most satisfying endings i've seen in the entire genre.

I didn't get a chance to play the demo, but is it true they basically took your abilities and made it so you can only use them with certain weapons? Like apparently you can only use Ki pulse and blocking with certain weapons and only dodge with other, different weapons or something? Because if that's the case fucking yuck.

It's like the job switch from stranger of paradise. Basically samurai style has same old nioh gameplay with some new stuff like perfect blocks, charge up attacks and the ability to do an attack right after a ki pulse. Hitting the switch style button and going into ninja mode has a different equipment loadout you can have. In ninja mode you dont have stances for weapons and it plays a bit more like a standard action game. I think the worry is that there's not enough inputs to have active skill variety in ninja mode and you can't ki pulse. Instead you do perfect dodges which can recover ki and instead of stances you assign ninjutsu skills to r1 triangle, square, cross. Attacking recovers ninjutsu charges, you can even do air combos and generally be faster. Theres a lot more inputs for active skills too with ninja mode using directional input so maybe we'll still see a healthy variety of skills.

Then that's ki pulsing as well because that's an ability in the previous Nioh games. Not having ki pulse isn't as big as a deal some people make it out to be. Kekkai/Barrier talisman purges yokai pools when you walk onto them.

Then you're someone who has never played through to end game content.

Ninja mode has "Mist" which still has the same animation canceling property of a ki pulse, just without the ki regain and yokai dispel. In exchange you get a little bit of movement if the stick is held down and you can enable the yokai dispel with a skill. So all you're really missing is the ki restoration and stances but the muscle memory of "do an attack string and hit R1 to cancel recovery" still remains the same so it doesn't feel that off. You can instead "flux" into a ninjutsu instead of a stance using that old flux muscle memory. You've also got more air options and Mist can cancel the air hang time lag as well. I was hesitant about ninja mode at first but by the end of the demo I was enjoying it a lot. I would like to see a few more active inputs for it though. Like let us have a few different strong attack combo enders that change depending on what stage of light it comes after. Ninja mode should be closer to playing Ninja Gaiden while Samurai mode is Nioh, or at least that's how I want to look at it.

Being able to use Mist to disengage and use Ninjutsu for Ki regen, or just Evading for it helps make up for Ki management that might be missing, but Mist should be fully cancellable with Ninjutsu to bring that across. I don't think it will need different strong combo enders based on attack stage provided they actually make use of all the directional inputs they now have access to, but that in itself is something extremely important for them to do. There was already enough inputs for them to have all the skills so now they absolutely have no excuse.
