They chose to not focus on the story and focus on the personalities. A good choice.
They are trying to make a more coherent story before Harada retires and trying to tie in past lore personality traits into the games (like anna calling her Bazooka lovely Tom cause she is a fan of Tom and Jerry, or Anna being a good cook because harada tweeted the official Tekken girls cooking teir list)

The story of tekken has always been a mess and didn't make sense until 7.
