On PotD magic starts off the weakest but gets good, melee stays good forever because attack steroid+high stun buildup+warcry or w/e its called that is 1000% busted, and guns are god tier from beginning to end up don't have many uniques and can be somewhat boring to play.
You can even do what I am and using Grimoire of Greater Elements only using the cream of the crop of T2 spells (blizzard, fireball, electric ping pong ball) and a gun to finish people off and it works amazingly on PotD.
I will say no matter what spec you are that 2 points into the wizard shield that reflects projectiles is 100% non-negotiable.

Make absolutely sure you pick up the ability to parry from the Thief/Ranger tree (I don't remember what it's called). Once you can parry, you're ready to unlock TRUE fun. I took no armor/health upgrades and just maxed out the dodge and parry so that I had to actually play the game actively and it was fast paced and fun as fuck.

The game was fun as fuck. I beat it and greatly enjoyed it. I would say it would be game of the year but I'm expected Daemon Ex Machina Titanic Scion to be more fun.

Myself, I would vastly have preferred Pillars 3 over Avowed and the writing is worse than both Pillars 1 and 2, but the game is all right. I'm not done yet, but it will probably end up at least a 6/10 for me unless they do something stupid to ruin the Pillars lore.

I watched some videos of this game and there was something that really bothered me but nobody else seems to notice. The player character, in first person view, will sometimes swing a weapon in a circle as if they are swinging it around their head but the weapon remains in full view the entire time. It is one of the most ridiculous and stupid looking animations I have ever seen in a game.

The reason why the exploration is great in this game is the top notch area design and the really fun way that they have the controls work. They let you clamber on nearly everything and they don't give you invisible walls, which is great, because somehow bugging the game into going out of bounds and killing yourself is still way funner than what Clair Obscur does, where you're constantly bumping into the environment to see if you can go there or not. In Avowed, the answer is pretty much always "You can"

However, they fuck it up by having relatively low enemy variety and for 95% of the loot being crafting shit. A DLC or sequel that keeps the same core tenets but fixes those aspects could be a much better game, but it sounds like this game didn't succeed enough for that.

Avowed is the definition of a solid 7.5 out of 10. It has strengths, especially in world design and exploration, and the great combat, but it feels like a downgrade and oversimplification compared to Pillars of Eternity. The RPG systems are noticeably weaker and often feel underdeveloped.

Dialogue lacks depth, with very limited impact on the world or characters, there's also lack of RPG in the dialogue. There is barely any reactivity when stealing or interacting with the environment, which hurts immersion. Itemization is another low point. Non-unique items have almost no flavour, and even unique ones often come with disappointing or very basic stats. It is only slightly better than The Outer Worlds in this area.

The story has potential, but the ending boils down to a binary choice with no meaningful grey areas, but I really liked the companions, especially Garus.

In a year that includes a major RPG like Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Avowed fails to stand out. It is far from a bad game, but given Obsidian's legacy, it is a clear letdown, let's hope Outer Worlds is better.

Entering buildings in an open world game isn't the most important metric but it is still a metric. It's the same thing as whether visit able buildings have furniture inside. If you go into a house and it's got jack shit in there, the game quality immediately drops. If you go into a town and only 3/10 buildings are enerable, the quality drops.
