But don't you want to tank performance for similar results that most people won't notice?
Nvidia is such a cancer to gaming.
They introduced ray tracing way too early that it has huge performance hits for minimal visual benefit.
So the games run like shit but it's okay because they also sell you fake frame tech.
The performance hit also is making games with lower resolutions but that's also okay because they also sell upscaling tech too.
Imagine creating huge problems in gaming then selling tech to mitigate the problem you created and spinning it as a features they should want and charging top dollar for it.
An incredible scam that gamers bought hook, line and sinker.

Many of those "reflections" are completely nonsensical if you think about them for more than two seconds.

it's just a way for devs to be lazy with lighting when they're pumping out their franchise slop and for gfx manufacturers to convince people to pay for more expensive cards even though games don't look any better now than they did 5 years ago

rtx is cool but love little tricks like these
look at the rims and how the red/yellow spokes "reflect" within the chromed lip of the rim
but it's all just a manually painted texture

>They introduced ray tracing way too early
Anything worse than the RTX3080 is completely incapable of running ray tracing in such a way that:
>the image quality is acceptable
>the frame rate is also acceptable

In fact, if you are really demanding, NO Nvidia GPU is capable of running ray tracing in real time in an acceptable manner (my RTX3090 definitely isn't), so your only solution is to generate frames by magic, in addition to running at a much lower native resolution than the final rendering.

None of those reflections make sense. Fake reflections like screenspace also can't reflect anything offscreen like picrel, which is reflecting the billboards from a building offscreen to the left. Also calling raytracing a meme is like calling Doom 3s stencil shadows a meme. Just because your shit PC cant run it doesn't mean it's a meme you retard

Is there a "modern engine" version of this?
Where the devs pull a clever move and circumvent their limitations by thinking outside the box? Or is everyone in gamedev low IQ now?

Bro calm down, not everyone needs a photon-accurate simulation of a light bulb bouncing off Gordon Freemanโ€™s crowbar. You act like RT is some holy grail when 90% of it is indistinguishable from baked lighting in motion. Meanwhile, devs with actual talent are still squeezing magic out of raster with good direction and smart tricks. Just because you dropped your college savings on a 50x0TI doesnโ€™t mean itโ€™s suddenly essential.

bro you showed a picture with random lighting and said, "no rt just pure art direction" as if this is in anyway doing the same thing as rt, not only that the lighting in your screenshot looks like absolute shit, light doesn't work that way in real life and this is what rt tries to imitate real life lighting.

While THAW's version of Minneapolis looks pretty good for a level from 1999. You can't possibly have that method of lighting work very well if you want to have dynamic lights from something like a car or a flash light on the skater or a day/night cycle.

That is kind of why objects and building textures abruptly load in and out in THUG1, THUG2, and THAW when the time of day changes. Although those levels are specifically meant to be viewed at different times of the day, while Minneapolis was always meant to be viewed at night.
